Boston Top Ten: April 02 Edition
The Boston Red Sox have packed it in, and sold just about everything that wasn't nailed down not named Tike. Here's a look at the initial fruits of that labor.
1. Oliver Perez
Starting off is ace pitching prospect Oliver Perez. After recovering from a setback during spring training, he's back on top of the prospect pile here in Boston, and at 20 years old is already looking at cracking the majors in the next couple of seasons. His duration and strikeout ability make him a future star in the league.
2. Carlos Zambrano
Some might say he's the real #1 prospect in the system. I'd agree! All the makings of a true ace pitcher, another 20 year old hurler with top tier duration, and all the talent in the world. He's probably going to be ready around the same time Perez is, making this a 1-2 punch that should hopefully shake the East.
3. Delvin James
Another pitcher almost ready for the bigs, the Red Sox had a lot of returns in the pitching department during this rebuild firesale. Older at 24, he's matured into what should be a contributing pitcher at the big leagues.
4. Victor Alvarez
Surprise surprise, another starting pitching talent in #4. At 25 years old, he's poised and ready to make his major league debut. Will it happen this year, or will the Red Sox spring him loose as a fresh faced 26 year old rookie to light up the East? His duration issues certainly warrant some help.
5. Mike Adams
Already producing as a closer at the big league level at 23, Adams is on the cusp of being a star, and not just a star prospect. He's got no holes in his game, and should be getting the ball in the 9th inning for a decade plus as long as he keeps hurling well.
6. Ricky Nolasco
Another pitcher? Fuck this team can't hit! Ricky is a young 19 year old who's well away from being major league ready, but on a team with so many pitchers already close to ready, that's not a bad thing. Boston hopes to see big things out of Nolasco with some luck of the sim gods.
7. Franklin Gutierrez
Holy shit a hitter! And what a hitter we have here. Franklin is a triple threat at the bat, on defense, and on the bases. He should be in the top 10 stolen bases, ABs, and runs categories for years to come in HOFFBL. At only 19 years old, it could be as soon as 2-3 years from now when he starts dominating all aspects of the game.
8. Clay Hensley
Hensley is a project, but with some work on his release and his mechanics and he could become a force. With starting capability, reducing his walk counts might make him a sly candidate for a future starting rotation regular.
9. Alfredo Aceves
Afredo makes an already deep pitching department that much richer. We should see him in high leverage situations in Boston in the upcoming years, hopefully in playoff situations.
10. Marco Estrada
Rounding out this top 10 is yet another starting prospect, one who needs a little more love to see his day in the sun, but with all the peripherals to succeed if he finds his way. At 18, he's got all the time in the world to figure it out.
