Braves 5/24
Well, against some of the best the Braves went 3-2 and had an additional win against the Padres to finish the week 4-2.
The exciting news of the week was Atlanta trading for Nomo from the Yankees after it turned out stud Ace Smoltz was injured in his last start and will be gone for another 4 weeks. The chance random discussion that brought Nomo to Atlanta was perfect timing as the rotation was headed for extreme turmoil.
Maddux now has the opportunity to increase his win total while Smoltz is resting / in rehab, but in his first try, he was the hard luck loser to the Dodgers. He only gave up one, but it didn’t matter at the end of the day, he got the L. Maddux sits at 405 wins and needs 17 more to tie the all time record. In his prime that would have been a very easy task to do this year, alas, he’ll probably need to play one more season to have a chance.
Somewhat ironically Nomo’s first start with the Braves was against his long time team, the Dodgers who decided he was expendable a couple seasons ago and shipped him off to the Yankees. This reporter couldn’t get him to say if there were any hard feelings, but he did shut them out for the 8 innings he pitched, and got the win.
Valverde picked up two more saves for the week, and still leads the league with 20. He has been absolutely fantastic and it turns out the Braves pitching coach Leo Mazzone had Jose meet with the great Doug Corbett in the off season. Let’s hope he continues to keep getting save after save.
