Well Braves fans let us celebrate John being elected to the Hall of Fame!. Of the 22 GMs that voted, only two did not vote for him. Hard to understand what caused two to not vote for him, alas it is what it is, and at the end of the day he was elected to the Hall as his career dictated he should be. What most have forgotten, he did not start life as a Brave, he actually was spotted by the current Astro GM and was drafted in 2nd round, 31st overall pick, by Baltimore in 1976.
Leo Mazzone happened to get stuck in traffic after flying into Miami headed to the Braves Spring Training complex in West Palm, and saw Fulgham pitch down in Miami as he waited for rush hour to abide, and liked what he saw and convinced the Skipper to execute the trade from Baltimore to Atlanta on 2 / 2 / 1978 (Going to ATL: P J. Fulgham. Going to BAL: P W. Brusstar, P P. Zachry). At the time Brusstar was the Atlanta closer.
The first of John’s wins was on 4 / 7 / 1980.
John got a ring for the World Series in 1981.
Hit first career homerun on 4/23/1982, off Doug Bird (SDG).
When it comes to extreme pitching excellence John won the Cy Young Award in 1982, going 23-2, 1.69 ERA.
John was only selected to the all star game two times. He was selected to the 1987 and 1991 summer classics.
Won Pitcher of the Month award on 10 / 1 / 1987, going 4-0, 1.25.
Won Pitcher of the Month award on 9 / 1 / 1988, going 4-2, 1.13.
Won Player of the Week award on 9 / 19 / 1988, winning 2 games with a 0.53 ERA.
Won Pitcher of the Month award on 10 / 1 / 1988, going 6-0, 0.17.
John got his second ring when he won another World Series with Atlanta in 1988.
He pitched a NO-HITTER against San Diego on 9 / 25 / 1990, striking out 4.
For a repeat he pitched a NO-HITTER against St. Louis on 8 / 28 / 1991, striking out 5.
Then for the Hat Trick he pitched NO-HITTER against Cincinnati on 6 / 5 / 1992, striking out 8.
John pitched his entire major league career in Atlanta and still has the all time 5th lowest ERA among pitchers that qualify. While he only had 238 wins, in games that he got a decision, he won more than 70% of them. Very few pitchers can even remotely come close to claiming that. Had it not been for the Braves always having some of the best pitchers in baseball, John would have had even more wins, alas he was relegated to the bullpen on a few of his seasons.
John joins a litany of retired Braves that will are on the Ring of Fame in Atlanta’s Stadium.
