Philadelphia Phillies April Report
Record: 16-9
Home: 9-6
Road: 7-3
Positive Team Stat: Steals–80 (1st)
Notes: 80 steals is an absolutely absurd pace. A prorated total would be around 480 swipes. Not feasible, but we are certainly at an eye opening pace.
Negative Team Stat: Walks Allowed–72 (19th)
Notes: We are giving out way too many free passes. We need to get that dialed in, and we could start rolling even more.
Major League Spotlight
Best Hitter: 2B Chase Utley
April Stats: .289/.402/.511/.913 OPS 5 2Bs 5 HRs 14 RBIs 20 Runs 12 BBs 9 Ks
Notes: Chase Utley didn’t exactly get off to the torrid start he had for the Astros from a season ago, but he certainly got off to a good one. Utley is hitting in the cleanup spot, and is enjoying his time there. He also already has 19 stolen bases and has only been caught stealing once. We are very happy to have Utley here.
Best Pitcher: SP Ben Sheets
April Stats: 5 Starts 5-0 1.89 ERA 38.0 IP 33 Hs 8 ERs 6 BBs 45 Ks
Notes: Ben Sheets has truthfully been an ace the past couple of seasons, but the roster just hasn’t been very good around him…until now. He won his first NL pitcher of the month, and I have a feeling there will be plenty more for the lad. He also got May off to a wonderful start as he blanked the Astros in a dominant effort. He is DEALING right now.
Minor League Spotlight
Prospect: SS Jemile Weeks (AA)
Notes: Week is hitting .365 while also having 14 free passes. He is 5/5 in steal attempts. The kid has the potential to maybe be a leadoff hitter down the line if his development continues. He hit very well last season in Single A, but it’s continuing very well into the next level. The Phillies are excited to see his long-term prospects as he continues to develop into a fine young player.
