The Ivan Rodriguez era, if one can call it that, got off to an inauspicious start finished the week at 1-5 after being outscored 58-8 by the
Diamondbacks in a 3 game set, and taking one of three from the Rockies in Miami. The Marlins made a couple of moves after last nights
game, sending Khalil Greene back to AAA after a rough start to the season, and calling up reliever Brandon Lyon to add some length
to the pen. Greene came over to the Marlins in the Carl Everett trade with Texas and many thought that he might solve the revolving
door at third, and after hitting .301 with 40 doubles and 19 homers in Destin last year, hopes were high, however Greene struggled right
out of the gate after winning the job in spring training only batting .164 with a sub .500 ops. He'll get some time to figure his swing out
in Destin. Meanwhile Monday's lineup had Youkilis moving to 3B with rookie Jesus Guzman moving to 1B and Matt Lawton moving to the
DH spot. Who moves in to the lineup? Rookie Delmon Young, called up from Destin Monday after obliterating AAA pitching to the tune of
.376/.427/1.133. Young had 15 homers in only 170 AB's and the Marlins are hoping the youngster can provide some pop in a lackluster
lineup. Young won't be old enough to drink until after the season, but there's really nothing more for him to prove in the minors at this
point.
Comings and Goings........the transaction kind of lost in the shuffle with the Greene and Young news is Lyon making his big league debut.
Lyon was actually acquired by the Marlins in the Pudge Rodriguez deal with the Cards back in 02, but Rodriguez jokingly said he wouldn't
hold that against him. Many thought he's make the team out of spring training this year after a stellar year at Destin last year, but he was
one of the last cuts. This year he's been even more impressive, posting a .76 era with a whip barely above 1 striking out 33 in 23+ innings
and only walking 11. The Marlins bullpen has been very disappointing this year, so he'll definitely get his chances.
Peak at the Prospects. Last month we highlighted SS Johnny Peralta who is one of the few bright spots on the Marlins big league squad. This
month we take a look at SP Homer Bailey. Bailey was the 20th overall pick by the Marlins in 2004 as an 18 year old out of La Grange HS in
La Grange, Texas. Bailey had a couple of OK years in A ball with nothing to really right home about, but this year things seem to have finally
clicked as Bailey a 4-0/1.59 stat line before getting the call up to AA. Things have not been quite as easy at AA for a now 20 year old, but
he's still posting a 2-1 K/BB ratio and and a 1.32 K/9 IP line. At 6'4 and 223 lbs, he's got a body to be an innings eater at the big league
level and projects as a middle of the rotation guy. He's still a few years away from logging any major league innings, but he's just one of
the many arms that the Marlins have accumulated through the last few years in the draft and through trades that the Fish hope can lead
the big league resurgance.
