July sucks. It's too hot and the Astros are 10 games back. Put a child's plastic astronaut fork in this season because it is officially done. The Astros took us on a ride for the first half but management has begun to advertise veterans so it appears that the water is in the boat, and the boat is under the water. We will try to keep the core of the team together but anyone over 30 is an option to trade. Lew Ford, always the vocal one on the team, expressed his frustration after the team's 4-3 loss on 6/27. "We were all brought here to win, we really wanted to get the win today, on the boss' birthday, it's frustrating when you let games like that slip away.
After two game splits with Arizona, St Louis, and Pittsburgh the Astros got swept out of SF. The little teeny tiny piece of good news in this hot mess is that they were able to win the one game against Chicago before the All-Star Break, but it ended up being a lot less meaningful than we could have imagined two sims ago. Jose Guillen winning player of the week seems like an eternity ago now. Another slice of good news, before I write the Prospect Watch for July, Melvin Nieves has finally started to hit going 10-24 over his last 5 games. We are still looking for signs of that Minnesota power though.
CL Frasor didn't make the All-Star game? That seems like a rather large oversight.
Brian Anderson will finally be joining the ML staff after nursing a blister on his finger in AAA, he is slotted to get his first Astro start against the Braves. Can anyone slow them down? Will the Astro's free fall continue? Tune in next time sports fans as we continue to watch this season spiral down the toilet.
