We have arrived at August 8th, 2007 and the Astros are still 14 games back. There was very little deadline activity after the initial frenzy frenzy, other than picking up a late 1st round draft pick. Let's take a look at how the first sim of August treated the team. The Astros broke out the bats to end July on a 9-4 win against Milwaukee. Arroyo gave up 2 ER over 7 innings to pick up his 11th win. Castillio went 3/5 from the leadoff spot with a HR and 4 RBIs.
Dontrelle Willis got the win for the Astros in game 2 to start August off on a positive note. Willis pitched into the 8th inning of the 9-5 win, giving up 4 runs in the first 4 innings before finishing strong. Adams, Hieptas, Butler, and Stairs all collected 2 hits. Stairs appears to be getting more at bats now that the team has fallen out of contention, picking up 5 hits in his quest to get to 3000. He currently sits at 2848 and has signed a 510k extension to try to reach the milestone next season. Melvin Nieves hit his 14th HR of the season.
The Astros finished off the sweep behind the arm of Cliff Lee. There were rumors that he was going to be traded at the deadline but remained with the team. He gave up 4 ER in 7.2 innings along with an unearned run, and the bullpen gave up 3 more. It was the offense that got the job done. Nieves, Ford, and Guillen all went yard and powered the Astros to the 13-8 win.
Things turned sour as the Astros arrived in Philadelphia. They dropped the opener 3-2 behind a solid performance by Derek Lowe. Cole Hamel matched him and went longer than him in a game that saw Jason Isringhausen pick up his 1st loss to the season and CL Chad Cordero picking up his 8th w.
The team that shows up against winning teams showed up in game 2. The Astros got blown out 13-2. The route was on after Philly answered the Astros 2nd inning run with 5 of their own. Philadelphia used homeruns by Matt Kemp, Curtis Granderson, Chase Utley and Rudolpho Castro to take a 2-0 series lead.
The Astros were able to claim game 3 with a 9th inning run, Jason Frasor picked up the 5-4 win. Melvin Nieves has hit the power surge button recently collecting homerun #16.
The Phillies took game 4 behind an absolute gem by Ben Sheets. It took a 9 inning shutout to get the 1-0 win for Sheets. The Phillies got a run in the 5th and that was enough as Dontrelle Willis picked up the loss.
It looks like we have reached the point in the season where we start to look forward to the post season and the off season.
