As the Cardinals look to make the division race close, the Astros are far enough back not to matter but close enough to watch it unfold. As interesting as the division race is starting to look, and how tempting it is to day dream about what could have been, there is still baseball to be played in Houston. Great news in that the Astros had a sim without any talent deaths. In other positive news the Astros are 3 games over .500 and the sudden plunge to sub .500 baseball doesn't seem quite as imminent.
The Astros currently are 61-58 which is 2 games better than some ancient math guru idi....SKITTY.....The Astros are 3 games above .500 and look to bounce back after a loss to the Dodgers.
The sim started well with a win over the Mets. The win gives the Astros their 34th win at home against 24 home losses. Houston has played 7 games under .500 on the road. Just playing .500 ball on the road would have them still chasing STL. NY jumped out to a 4th inning 4 run lead. The Astros answered with one run in the 4th, 2 in the 5th, and 1 in the 6th. It appears that Stairs got on in the 12th....Adams couldn't move him over, Ford hits a double but Stairs is soooooooooo slow he can't score. Nieves gets the walk off RBI. Jason Insringhausen picks up the win.
The Astros took the lead in the 8th inning of game 2 and held on for a 5-4 win. CJ Wilson got the win out of the bullpen and Frasor picked up save number 34. Derek Lowe gave up 3 over 6 but the bp came in and put up a goose egg to seal the deal.
The Mets got their 12th inning revenge in game 3. They scored in the top of the 12th and Byrdak locked the game down in the bottom of the inning. The Mets were able to salvage the game but the Astros win the series 2-1.
The Astros headed to the Mile High City looking to improve on their road record and the thin air did not disappoint. The Astros road 3 HR and the top 4 hitters contributing 11 RBIs to a 16-4 win. Arroyo gave up 2 runs over 8 innings and Rookie Villareal had a 0th inning mop up opportunity and it seemed to get away from him a little bit as he allowed 2 late runs. It was good experience for the rookie though.
The Rockies bounced back in game two and hung a 7-2 L on Dontrelle Willis, knotting the series up at a game each. Ted Lilly returned to the rotation for game 3 as Cliff Lee recovering on the DL. Lilly gave up 3 runs but was unable to get out of the 6th. Moylan gave up 2 runs and Mattes and Frasor closed the game out. The bats showed up in the thin air, once again. The Astros scored 8 runs on 12 hits to take a 2-1 series lead.
Colorado beat Derek Lowe up early and often and the bats must have been packed before the game as the Astros drop game 4 12-2. Colorado gets the split and the Astros got to go home to play LA.
This is where we leave our heroes as they recover from a stinging 7-5 10th inning loss to the Dodgers, looking to pad their record. Joe Price said after the game, "Building a winning culture is one of the hardest things to do. Our goal for the remainder of the year is to remain over .500 and try to finish at least 10 games over. We can build on that in the coming years."
