The Astros have gone 5-5 over the last 10 games and sit at 19 games back of Chicago and 11 back of the soon to be GM less Cardinals. Here is how the last sim shaped up.
9/16 The Brewers got their revenge against Dontrelle Willis in game 2 of the series. The Astros took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the 4th before it appears that a lot of walks and an error cost the Astros 5 unearned runs. Pulido improves to 3-18 as the Brewers rode the big 4th inning to a 7-4 win and even the series 1-1. Billy Butler went yard 2x in the losing effort. Have I mentioned in this article that I hate 2 game series?
9/17 Washington walks into Houston and started getting hits off Ted Lilly before they got off the bus. As they took the field the Nationals led 3-0 already. In all seriousness, the game was over before the Astros came to bat for the first inning as the Nationals score 3 in the first and 3 in the second to cruise to Brett Myers 3rd win of the season in what I would interpret to be his rookie season. Washington leads the series 1-0, winning the opener 7-3.
9/18 The Astros were able to take game 2 on the back of some early runs, an 8th inning 3 run shot from Lew Ford and 7 strong innings from Derek Lowe. Isringhausen and Frasor finally came together in the way that we envisioned to lock down the 8th and 9th for Frasor's 43 save of the year. Frasor said after the game that being traded together to Pittsburgh during the upcoming offseason has made the pair closer friends and they push each other with the competitive spirit that they each exude. Series tied 1-1 after the 6-2 Astro win. Astros improve to 1-2 for the sim. Another 2 game series.
9/19 Bronson Arroyo took the mound for the Astros upon their arrival in Queens but by the end of the day this game was anything but a pitching duel. The Astros had to call on there late inning guys to get them into extra innings after giving up a pair of runs in the 7th to blow a 6-4 lead and the Mets took advantage of the extra time to answer the Astros 2 runs in the top of the 12th with 3 in the bottom to walk it off. Mets lead series 1-0. Arroyo pitched ok, giving up 3 runs in 5.2 innings but the bats went quiet after the 5th and then were just outhit in extra innings. Astros sim record drops to 1-3.
9/20 The Astros once again bounce back in game 2 to tie up the series with a 3-2 win. Dontrelle Willis gave up 1 run over 7 innings, striking out 11 and walking 1. Cornejo went 8 innings for the Metropolitans but couldn't quite get the game tied up to get him off the hook and he picks up his 17-13 will Willis improves to 7-10. Richie Sexon 32nd HR of the season in the 8th gave the Mets some life but the bullpen locked things down after Moylan gave up the 2 run HR to give himself and Willis an ER all on one pitch.
9/21 Another series opener and another complete failure to hit as the Dodgers take game 1, 1-0. It is like the team needs an off day every time they arrive in a new city. Rumor has it that Astro trainers will attend a jet lag seminar in New Zealand in January. Adam Eaton dominated the Astro bats through 7.1 innings and one of this fans favorite Pirates from the 25 losing seasons years, Zach Duke gets save #24. Lilly pitched well for 4 innings but but couldn't get the run support to pick up the W. Sim record, 2-4
9/22 I feel like I can copy and paste here but the Astros once again bounce back in game 2 winning 5-4. Darren Erstad is the walk off hero in this one as he hits his first homerun of the year off previously mentioned Zach Duke in the bottom of the 10th and the series gets tied up at 1 and the sim record improves to 3-4.
Fans have to be surprised that the Astros are in this situation after the way that the first half of the season went but here we are. The Astros are staring at a .500 record with 8 games remaining to improve on last year. At least the last games are meaningful for something. The good news is that the Pirates can't catch us even as fans mutter about them sabotaging the first round pick they sent us . Let's all look forward to the off season and remember that all good sims come to those that wait.
