Draft day got anxious quickly. The first 5 picks went quickly, then the Marlins took our favorite rated short stop. Tampa was on the clock and the Yankees had a shortlist of Hendricks and Suarez. The pirates had offers in to Tampa to trade up and an offer pending with the Yankees if Hendricks went to TB. The crisis was averted when Tampa took SP McHugh, the Yankees got their guy, and the Pirates got their SS.
Suarez is a 17 yo SS from Venezuela, keeping with the teams recent drafting patterns. While the Pirates had Seimen rated higher, they are very happy with the minimal amount of points they will have to put into Suarez as he has a B HR rating and a good in walks. The points saved in talent boosts will be needed to make him a stronger defensive SS.
The Pirates have a lot of talent in line to get their talent points. The goal of this draft where Pittsburgh had 9 picks coming in was to target players that they wanted but not have 8 more point projects. The strategy began to unfold as the Pirates send all five of their second round picks to move up to 19. They passed on Dee Gordon for personal reasons and went with RL Pirate 2B Josh Harrison.
As the Pittsburgh 27 came up, Minnesota made the first of many calls to the Pirates seeking to get the late round first. The Pirates have been trying to get Neil Walker several different ways so we gave up the first rounder for neil and 20 points.
We were able to regroup during the 2nd round and went point hunting with our 3rd round picks. Minnesota came calling again at picks 9 and 12 for 15 points and a starting pitcher.
The Pirates were able to pick up an extra 3rd round pick with a trade to the White Sox and they selected Andy Dirks LF. Dirks offers a defensive upside, a sneaky base stealer and decent consistency.
Overall the team seems to be happy with the draft. They believe that the core of the team has come together and it is time to bring in the future Super Stars and fine tune the core players as they get ready to go into critical times in their development.
