A new season, a new look. We have put both league reports into the same article, maybe Chris won't get arthritis in his mouse hand quite so quickly. I wasn't going to do an article until after the first month of play but call it point lust or being motivated after seing Erstad at the top of the NL chart after one sim. Whatever the reasoning, here is your first Need For Speed Report:
In the NL Erstad and Podsednik set the pace out of the gate. I don't think I expect Erstad to continue to lead the league but he has the speed to stay on the chart for a while. Podsednik looks set to follow up his 70 steals in 2007 with a potent SB Title in 2008. Pagan, Weeks, Sanchez, Green, and Victorino are all names familiar to the list and are trailing the leaders by 2 bases after a sim. Upton, Perez, and Cedeno round out the list tied for 8th with 5 thefts. I have had my eye on Weeks for a few seasons now, I think he is one of my favorites to root for this year, after Erstad of course.
Quest for Lou Brock's 1970 Record of 106
It is still early but if you can get off to pace strong enough to get you through the rise and falls, the best time to start is early. Through 14 games Erstad and Podsednik are at a 52% clip which is woefully short of 106. at 92 SBs. Yes it is early but we will get a look during the May report to see if anyone has been able to get up to speed.
# TOP 10 SB SB
1 D. Erstad (PIT) 8
1 S. Podsednik (ARZ) 8
3 A. Pagan (SFG) 6
3 R. Weeks (LAN) 6
3 A. Sanchez (ATL) 6
3 S. Green (CIN) 6
3 S. Victorino (CHN) 6
8 J. Upton (SFG) 5
8 S. Perez (CIN) 5
8 R. Cedeno (ATL) 5
In the AL, Jeter, Castillo, and Rollins all started faster than the NL leaders, something we saw all of last season. Jeter picked off where he left off last year as he looks to defend his AL and ML stolen base title. Castillo at 1 back and J Roll at 2 back look like early contenders to take a shot at him. Crisp, Encarnacion, Old Man Suzuki, and Willie T sit at 7 thefts and Ralphy Furcal sits tied with ML record holder Chipper Jones and Carl Crawford at 6.
Quest for Chipper's 2006 Record of 112
Jeter has set an insane pace out of the gate. 12 SBs in 14 games is an 85.7% rate. It is an insane rate and why early season stats are so much fun. If he were to maintain this pace he would end up with 138 or 139 steals. Castillo is stealing at a 78% rate while Rollins looks unmotivated at 71% Castillo is on pace for 126 steals and J Roll, for 115. Both good enough to beat Chipper's record but it won't matter if Jeter doesn't slow down. In the grand scheme of things, Castillo and J Roll are on a more sustainable pace but Jeter is Jeter. We will see what his pace looks like in May.
