Monday 4/25/2008: Kansas City's Anderson wins Player of the Week award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Garret Anderson, Kansas City's starting leftfielder. Garret went 12 for 20 (.600), while hitting 4 HR and collecting 12 RBI. It's the 5th time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to Chicago (N)'s centerfielder Carlos Beltran. Carlos went 12 for 24 (.500), while hitting 3 HR and collecting 11 RBI.
Sunday 4/24/2008: Melvin Nieves on fire, hits for cycle
PITTSBURGH - Pittsburgh's first baseman Melvin Nieves once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up Florida's pitching staff with a 5 hit performance on Sunday. A 342 foot drive to right field marked his 1st hit, a two-run homerun off Brandon Backe in the 1st inning. A pitch from Brandon Backe in the 3rd inning left his bat for a triple. A single in the 4th off Brandon Backe accounted for his 3rd hit. In the 6th inning he belted a double off Brian Wolfe. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! A double off Akinori Otsuka in the 10th inning accounted for his 5th hit. Melvin scored 3 runs, and he collected 3 RBI as well! He's having a very good season so far, batting .346. He becomes the 129th player in league history collect at least a single, double, triple and a homerun in a single game. On 5/28/2007, Royce Clayton was the last player to hit for the cycle.
Sunday 4/24/2008: Minnesota's Griffey Jr. out for 5 weeks
MINNESOTA - Minnesota's players were scared when they had to watch Ken Griffey Jr. suffer a serious injury when he dove for a ball in the game against Oakland. He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. Griffey Jr. will probaby miss 5 weeks. After being taken to a local hospital, Griffey Jr. was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Dislocated Shoulder. His season features a batting average of .187 (14 hits in 75 AB), no doubles, one triple and 3 bombs. Griffey Jr. collected 14 RBI and 12 runs as well.
Sunday 4/24/2008: Victor Martinez out for 6 weeks
KANSAS CITY - Kansas City's catcher Victor Martinez will miss at least 6 weeks after he got hurt seriously in a collision at home plate. He laid on the ground without movement for several minutes and had to be carried off the field. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Broken Cheekbone. Martinez has hit for a .313 average this season. He has 11 extra base hits along with 39 total bases, resulting in a .609 slugging percentage.
Saturday 4/23/2008: Miguel Cabrera nabs six hits against Tampa Bay
TAMPA BAY - Miguel Cabrera is among the best pure hitters in the game, but his 6 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself. His 2nd hit was a RBI double off Wayne Franklin in the 5th inning. That one tied it at 5 runs apiece. His 5th hit, a two-run homerun off Billy Wagner in the 8th inning, landed an estimated 334 feet from home plate. He collected singles in the 3rd (one RBI) , in the 5th (two RBIs) , in the 7th and in the 9th inning (two RBIs). Miguel did drive in 8 while scoring 5 runs on his own. This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 20 hits in 51 at bats, resulting in a .392 batting average. The final score of the game was 22-5.

KANSAS CITY - When it rains, it pours. Kansas City's right-hander Ugueth Urbina will not pitch for at least 7 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against New York (A) where he left the field in the 9th inning. Strained Tricep Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. In 0 starts this year Ugueth struck out 9 batters in 13.1 innings of work. His ERA is 1.35, his record 0-0.
