Saturday 5/17/2014: Jay Bruce homers three times against Colorado
COLORADO - Jay Bruce was in a groove, and the results spoke for themselves. He powered New York (N) to a 33-4 win over Colorado by homering three times. His 1st blast, a solo homerun off J.J. Putz in the 3rd inning, landed an estimated 417 feet from home plate. In the 5th inning he unloaded a two-run homerun off Sean Burnett. His 3rd shot, off Sean Burnett in the 9th inning, was a two-run homerun and cleared the fence in left-center. Jay stroked 6 hits in 8 AB, with 6 RBI.
Friday 5/16/2014: It's NO-NO time for Corey Kluber against Pittsburgh
SAN DIEGO - San Diego's right-hander Corey Kluber made some history today, firing a no-hitter against Pittsburgh. Their hitters found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, never having a chance against his overpowering stuff. 'I felt early that I was on top of my game. Fortunately I was able to keep that feeling the entire game.' Kluber (6-4) fanned 5 and walked none, throwing 89 pitches. Manny Machado provided San Diego with the offense Kluber needed as he went 2 for 4, stroking two 2B's. San Diego scored 3 runs on 9 hits.
Wednesday 5/14/2014: Josh Johnson blanks Oakland with a 1-hitter
TORONTO - Toronto's lefty Josh Johnson is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Oakland on just one hit. It's his 3rd shutout this season, and the 33rd time he has done it in his career. With one out in the 5th inning Aramis Ramirez singled to break up the no-hitter. Johnson (7-0) showed excellent control, walking nobody and fanning 6. 'I hit the corners with all of my pitches. That helped a lot!' Toronto's second baseman Ray Olmedo got 1 hit in 3 AB, stroking a double. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Johnson. Toronto scored 1 run on 5 hits.
Monday 5/12/2014: Minnesota's Giles severely injured
MINNESOTA - Minnesota is without its right-hander Ken Giles for at least 7 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Brett Lawrie in a game against Detroit. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. Minnesota wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Giles had suffered a Torn Bicep Muscle.
Monday 5/12/2014: Milwaukee's Utley wins Player of the Week award
It's the 3rd time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Boston's pitcher Carlos Zambrano. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 0.50 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well. It's the 5th time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to Milwaukee's first baseman Chase Utley. Chase went 10 for 24 (.417), while hitting 2 HR and collecting 12 RBI. Chase managed to drive in at least one run in every game he played this week. He has hit 4 taters while batting .223 this season. His 25 hits and 9 walks add up to a .315 on-base percentage.
Saturday 5/10/2014: Rich Hill blanks Pittsburgh with a 2-hitter
PITTSBURGH - Philadelphia's lefty Rich Hill is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Pittsburgh on just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 2nd time he has done it in his career. Hill (2-4) struck out 6 and issued 3 BB, throwing 73 of 120 pitches for strikes. 'Pitching a great game is always a good thing. And it doesn't get much better than today.' Howie Kendrick helped Hill at the plate, he collected 2 hits in 4 trips to the plate, with 2 RBI. Philadelphia scored 5 runs on 11 hits.
