Monday 4/25/1972: Player of the Week honors go to Inao and Melton
Kazuhisa Inao of Cleveland wins his 1st Player of the Week award for dominating American League's hitters the entire week. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 0.51 while going 2-0. A complete game added to his brilliant performance. San Francisco's leftfielder Bill Melton had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. He hit .563 with 6 RBI and slugged 1.375 in 16 at bats. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 7 games. He now has homered in 3 consecutive games as well! Melton has walked 6 times this year and posts a .346 OBP. While batting .292, 21 for 72, he has driven in 13 runs.
Thursday 4/21/1972: Chicago (A)'s Shamsky severely injured
CHICAGO (A) - Chicago (A)'s rightfielder Art Shamsky suffered a season ending injury when he hurt himself diving for a ball. He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. Shamsky was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Torn Rib Cage Muscle. His season numbers are: .196 AVG, 11 hits, one double, no triples and 2 taters, along with 4 RBI and 5 runs scored.
Wednesday 4/20/1972: Eddie Watt pitches his 2nd shutout of the season
BOSTON - Eddie Watt had some fun again. Boston hitters did not. Chicago (A)'s right-hander gave up just one hit in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 20 career shutouts in 151 games started. Watt (4-0) struck out 8 and issued 1 BB, throwing 68 of 102 pitches for strikes. 'Well, the ball went where I wanted it. I was able to hit the corners with all of my pitches.' Manny Sanguillen helped Watt at the plate, he went 2 for 4, doubling once. Chicago (A) scored 1 run on 7 hits.
Tuesday 4/19/1972: Jim Perry quiets Houston bats with shutout
HOUSTON - Jim Perry had some fun again. Houston hitters did not. Atlanta's right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 24 career shutouts in 367 games started. 'Today I just felt fine. I had a good feeling while warming up.' Perry (3-1) fanned 4 and walked 3, throwing 110 pitches. The hitting star for Atlanta was rightfielder Tommie Reynolds, he finished with 2 hits in 4 AB, homering once, and collecting 2 RBI. The final score of the game was 3-0.
