Monday 5/2/1972: Bonds and Nolan win Player of the Week award
Bobby Bonds wins his 3rd Player of the Week award. American League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. He had an on base percentage of .519 and hit .480, while driving in 4 runs. He now has homered in 3 consecutive games as well! It's the 2nd time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to Cincinnati's pitcher Gary Nolan. Nolan was overpowering all week long, going 2-0 with an ERA of 0.00. Along the way he struck out 6 in 17.2 innings. He hurled a shutout as well. Gary has a record of 6-0 this season, with an ERA of 1.10. In 49 Innings he was able to strike out 29 batters. Gary has pitched 2 shutouts and 3 complete games. He's 4th in the National League in ERA and 1st in wins!
Sunday 5/1/1972: Inao (CLE) and Bibby (PHI) win monthly pitcher award
Kazuhisa Inao pitched like a legend in April, and the American League named him Pitcher of the Month for his extraordinary performance. He had an ERA of just 0.81 in 44.2 innings of work in which he struck out 25 hitters. His record in April is 4-1. Kazuhisa pitched a shutout as well. Winner of this months National League Pitcher of the Month award is Philadelphia's Jim Bibby. He went 5-2 in April and finished the month with an ERA of 0.76. He struck out 49 in 59.1 innings. Jim pitched a shutout as well.
Sunday 5/1/1972: Red hot Rose Sr. and Evans win Batter of the Month award
The American League's best player of the month was Detroit's Pete Rose Sr., who wins the award for the 10th time in his career. He hit .379 with 21 RBI and slugged .632 in 95 at bats. The National League's best player of the month was Houston's Darrell Evans, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. Evans helped his team with an average of .407 and 21 RBI in 86 at bats.
Tuesday 4/26/1972: Baltimore has no chance in a 1-hitter by Tom Hall
CALIFORNIA - California's left-hander Tom Hall is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Baltimore on just one hit. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 12th time he has done it in his career. Hall (5-1) struck out 6 and walked 1, throwing 62 of 104 pitches for strikes. 'I'll have to give a lot of credit to my catcher. He put all the right fingers down today.' The hitting star for California was leftfielder Jose Cardenal, he finished with 5 hits in 5 AB, with 2 RBI. California improved its record to 16-6, scoring 4 runs on 14 hits.
Monday 4/25/1972: Fred Newman turns in great performance against Chicago (A)
TEXAS - Good things can happen when you throw strikes. And Fred Newman did so today, in a 1-hit shutout against Chicago (A). Newman (1-1) struck out none and issued 1 BB, throwing 37 of 75 pitches for strikes. 'I didn't feel that I had good stuff while warming up. But it got better the more I threw the ball. I guess I was lucky.' Joe Pepitone helped Newman at the plate, he went 2 for 3, hitting a double. Texas scored 2 runs on 4 hits.
