Breaking News
Monday 4/18/1979: Player of the Week honors go to Gilbreath and Murcer The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to Oakland's Rod Gilbreath this time, as the second baseman displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. He hit .609 with 5 RBI and slugged .913 in 23 at bats. San Diego's leftfielder Bobby Murcer had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. Bobby was on fire, hitting .480 with 3 HR and 8 RBI. Sunday 4/17/1979: Bill Singer out for full season CHICAGO (N) - Chicago (N)'s right-hander Bill Singer experienced probably the worst case scenario for a pitcher, a season ending injury. After pitching in the 1st inning of the game against Houston, Singer complained about serious pain in his throwing arm. He had to leave the game. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Torn Bicep Muscle which will require surgery. Bill has a record of 2-0 this season, with an ERA of 6.23. In 21.2 Innings he was able to strike out 14 batters. He's 1st in the National League in wins! Friday 4/15/1979: Andy Messersmith blanks Texas with a 2-hitter TEXAS - Great days are rare. But not for Chicago (A)'s right-hander Andy Messersmith. Texas found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 31st time he has done it in his career. Messersmith (2-1) struck out 2 and issued 4 BB, throwing 59 of 105 pitches for strikes. 'I was able to keep´em off balance. That certainly helped.' Graig Nettles helped Messersmith at the plate, he finished 1 for 3, blasting a homerun. Chicago (A) improved its record to 8-5, scoring 4 runs on 7 hits. Wednesday 4/13/1979: Montreal has no chance in a 2-hitter by Tom Seaver NEW YORK (N) - Tom Seaver had some fun again. Montreal hitters did not. New York (N)'s right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 52 career shutouts in 447 games started. Seaver (2-1) struck out 6 and issued 1 BB, throwing 70 of 104 pitches for strikes. 'Giving my team a chance to win is the most important thing for me. I was able to do it today.' Gary Gray provided New York (N) with the offense Seaver needed as he finished with 2 hits in 4 AB, blasting a homerun, with 3 RBI. New York (N) improved its record to 4-7, scoring 5 runs on 10 hits. Tuesday 4/12/1979: Cincinnati's Nolan severely injured CINCINNATI - Cincinnati's pitcher Gary Nolan was part of a scary incident that saw the right-hander being hit by a line drive in the 4th inning of the game between Cincinnati and San Diego. Team trainers immediately rushed onto the field after the frightening scene. Nolan will miss about 4-5 weeks. After being taken to a local hospital, Nolan was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Broken Finger. Tuesday 4/12/1979: Baltimore's Jeff Burroughs gets the cycle CLEVELAND - Baltimore's leftfielder Jeff Burroughs accomplished a difficult feat in a game against Cleveland, hitting for the cycle to improve his career batting average to .274! A single in the 1st off Jim Moyer accounted for his 1st hit. A pitch from Jim Moyer in the 3rd inning left his bat for a double. In the 4th inning he unloaded a triple off Albert Williams. A pitch from Albert Williams in the 6th inning left his bat for a three-run homerun, landing 464 feet from home plate in center field. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Jeff did drive in 3 while scoring 2 runs on his own. This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 15 hits in 43 at bats, resulting in a .349 batting average. 50 players in league history have so far hit for the cycle, including Jeff. On 9/10/1978, Reggie Jackson was the last player to hit for the cycle. Monday 4/11/1979: Staub (CAL) and Bethke (PHI) win P.O.W. award It's the 1st time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to California's third baseman Rusty Staub. Rusty was on fire, hitting .444 with 4 HR and 10 RBI. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 7 games. Philadelphia's pitcher Jim Bethke had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. Sunday 4/10/1979: Jim Bethke quiets New York (N) bats with shutout PHILADELPHIA - Great days are rare. But not for Philadelphia's right-hander Jim Bethke. Parker (1-0) struck out 9 and issued 1 BB, throwing 71 of 106 pitches for strikes. Atlanta's first baseman Joe Nolan went 1 for 4, blasting a homerun, scoring twice with 2 RBI. Friday 4/8/1979: Ron Bryant fires NO-NO against Texas TEXAS - Texas' bats were sleeping, and Oakland's Ron Bryant gave them no chance at all to wake up. I changed Forbes field around before stool took over. The dimensions are pretty neutral so not many players should get fucked there. Not to mention stool already has won 2 titles with the same dimensions.
