Fans on LA were treated to an exciting season with a disappointing end. A year after winning 80 games and 2 years after winning 66, the Dodgers won the division with 105 wins, just 1 gme behind Atlanta for best in the league. The Dodgers went coast to coast with great consistency, posting a losing record against just 1 team this season. They were 6-6 against Atlanta in mid-September but lost a pair of 2 game series against the Braves in the last half of the last month to finish 6-10. Those slide coincided with the loss of a potent bat in Ron Cey.
In addition, the club went 10-5 vs Montreal, 10-4 vs Mets, 9-5 vs Phillies, 11-4 vs Cubs, 8-6 vs Reds, 12-3 vs Pirates. 12-3 vs Cards, 7-7 vs Astros, 10-4 vs Padres and 10-6 vs Giants. However the rival Giants won 3 of 4 in the division series to end the season for the boys in blue.
In addition, the minor league clubs were very successful. The AAA Albuquerque Dukes won their league going 89-49 (.645) finishing just 1 game ahead of the Cubs AAA affiliate in a tight race.
The AA San Antonio Dodgers won their league as well and finished 90-48 (.652), 8 games ahead of the Braves AAA affiliate.
The class A Vero Beach Dodgers were the only club un the organization to not win their division this season, finishing 83-55 (.601) to finish 6 games behind the Giants affiliate.
There were several breakout performances this year. AAA Albuquerque was led in H (150), 2B (36), HR (T-12), SLG (.477), OPS (.870) by Randy Ready. He has a shot to be a future utility player for the club, or maybe a regular with a talent boost. The team was led in RBI (8) by catcher Tony Pena. Pena will be counted on at the major league level next year to share some of the load at C. He had a solid all-around season hitting .309, .384, .428 for a .812 OPS with 25 2B, 10 HR, 86 RBI, and 53 R. The club was led in R (106) and OBP (.441) by OF Brian Greer. Greer is another guy who should be contributing at the major league level in the near future. Newcomer Lenny Dykstra paced the team with a .312 avg. On the pitching side, several guys had noticeable campaigns. Mark Davis was 15-6 in 25 GS with 260 K and only 136 hits allowed in 196 IP with a 3.35 ERA. El Sid Fernandez was 13-7 in 24 starts with 225 K and 164 hits allowed and a 3.85 ERA in 191.2 IP at age 19. Jeff Calhoun was 12-3 in 25 GS with 142 K in 142 IP, allowing just 103 hits. He's expected to contribute next season. Rob Woodward had a breakout season with a 9-7 record in 20 GS with 161 K and 131 hits allowed in 136.2 IP.
At AA, there were a few more notable performances - perhaps none more impressive than Billy Taylor's. The big righty was 14-6 in 24 GS with 294 K in just 164 IP while allowing 105 hits with a 2.30 ERA. He's expected to take a crack at AAA next year. Todd Worrell also had a very good first season, going 3-5 with 37 SB in 58 games with 65 IP, 40 HA, 83 K and 23 BB. He's also expected to get a promotion to AAA. With the bat, the team was led in 2B by Gerry Davis with 36 in 382 AB before being promoted to AAA. Jeff Reed led the team with 14 HR and 64 R (tied with Bryan Little). Scotti Madison led the team with 74 RBI.
Overall, it was a very successful season for the Dodgers organization.
