The Dodgers are excited to announce the return of former fan favorite Dave Concepcion!
Concepcion was jettisoned in the early days after new ownership assumed control of the club as part of an organizational rebuild and committed to a new direction for the franchise. Drafted by the Dodgers in the first round of the 1967 draft, Concepcion - in his 8th season with the club - was one of many long time Dodgers traded away.
Concepcion along with Otto Velez was dealt to the San Francisco Giants for Bill Doran and Ray Searage. Velez was also re-acquired by the Dodgers a few seasons ago, so now Concepcion and Velez will team up to play alongside Doran and Searage. Concepcion, Doran, and Velez now make up 37.5% of the starting lineup while Searage has 30 QS in 46 GS (65%) with a 3.14 career ERA.
Concepcion was acquired to provide a short term upgrade at SS while holding down the fort until prospects Randy Ready or Brian Giles are ready. After a hot April and May, Concepcion slowed in June but so far is bouncing back somewhat in July, including a 6-11 start in his return to the Dodgers with 1 R, 2 2B, and 2 RBI. Concepcion is expected to lengthen the Dodgers lineup - an ideal 6 hitter that is consistent with good extra base pop and solid on base ability while providing steady defense and base running at short.
The club was getting good production vs lefties from Tom Brookens and Rick Down but they were struggling vs righties.
Concepcion has been very good for the season, hitting .277, .338, .503 with 22 2B, 3 3B, 14 HR, 58 RBI, 50 R, and 22 SB including .271, .318, .502 with 14 2B, 12 HR and 44 RBI for an .820 OPS vs righties - a massive upgrade at that position.
Fans and management alike were very pleased to see Concepcion return.
