The American League Player of the Week award goes to Chico Walker, Baltimore's starting rightfielder. Walker helped his team with an average of .625 and 8 RBI in 24 at bats. Eddie Murray from San Francisco wins his 7th Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. In 24 at bats he hit .542 with 2 HR and 8 RBI.
Saturday 4/16/1984: Dave Concepcion uncorks five hits against Cincinnati
LOS ANGELES (N) - 'Wow, five hits in one game is something special, isn't it?' said Los Angeles (N)'s shortstop Dave Concepcion after the 11-1 win over Cincinnati. Number 1 in the 1st inning, a shot estimated at 370 feet, cleared the wall in left field. In the 6th inning he unloaded a solo homerun off Chuck Rainey. He collected singles in the 3rd inning , in the 5th inning and in the 8th inning (one RBI). Dave did drive in 5 while scoring 3 runs on his own. He's having a very good season so far, batting .415.
Friday 4/15/1984: Boston's Seaver out for full season
BOSTON - Boston's right-hander Tom Seaver experienced probably the worst case scenario for a pitcher, a season ending injury. After pitching in the 1st inning of the game against Baltimore, Seaver complained about serious pain in his throwing arm. He had to leave the game. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Torn Ligament Elbow. Surgery will be performed next week. In 3 starts this year Tom struck out 8 batters in 14.1 innings of work. His ERA is 5.65, his record 0-1.
Wednesday 4/13/1984: Joe W. Price dominates Pittsburgh, gives up just 2 hits
HOUSTON - Houston's left-hander Joe W. Price is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Pittsburgh on just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 2nd time he has done it in his career. 'I was hitting my spots. Now I'll start concentrating on my next start, and hopefully it will work again.' Price (3-0) struck out 9 and walked none, throwing 67 of 97 pitches for strikes. Buddy Bell helped Price at the plate, he finished 4 for 5, stroking two 2B's, and collecting 4 RBI. Houston scored 13 runs on 18 hits.
Wednesday 4/13/1984: It's NO-NO time for Don Gullett against Chicago (N)
NEW YORK (N) - Chicago (N)'s bats were sleeping, and New York (N)'s Don Gullett gave them no chance at all to wake up. He was untouchable in firing a no-hitter in his 3rd game started this season. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' Gullett (1-0) struck out 5 and walked 2, throwing 74 of 123 pitches for strikes. New York (N)'s centerfielder Mookie Wilson got 2 hits in 4 AB, hitting a homerun. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Gullett. New York (N) improved its record to 8-3, scoring 1 run on 5 hits.

MILWAUKEE - California's Tom Hall drilled Milwaukee's leftfielder Joe Charboneau in the 6th inning. He was slow getting up and had to leave the game. Joe Charboneau will miss at least 5-6 weeks. Charboneau was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Broken Finger.
Monday 4/11/1984: Seattle's Easler wins Player of the Week award
The American League's best player of the week was Seattle's Mike Easler, who wins the award for the 4th time in his career. Mike was on fire, hitting .438 with 3 HR and 12 RBI. San Francisco's centerfielder Dave Henderson had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. In 29 at bats he hit .414 with 3 HR and 9 RBI. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 8 game hitting streak right now. Henderson has walked 1 times this year and posts a .429 OBP. While batting .412, 14 for 34, he has driven in 9 runs. He's 3rd in the National League in batting, 1st in homeruns and 2nd in RBI!
Sunday 4/10/1984: Huge blow for Texas' Splittorff, career over
TEXAS - It was one of baseball saddest days. Texas' lefty Paul Splittorff fell victim to a career ending injury in a game against California on Sunday. He complained about pain after throwing a pitch to Hideji Kato, then suddenly collapsed. Torn Tricep Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. His career featured a record of 27-61 with an ERA of 5.41. Baseball will certainly miss this great player.
Friday 4/8/1984: Andy Messersmith celebrates 300th win
CINCINNATI - Chicago (N)'s right-hander Andy Messersmith gained immortality by recording his 300th win in the big leagues. Messersmith allowed 2 earned runs while striking out 6 and walking 1 in 6 innings of work. His career features a 2.69 ERA, along with 2519 K's in 4472 innings. He has won 20 games 9 times in his career, setting a career high with 25 wins in 1976. 'You dream about that as a kid, but when you reach such a milestone it's hard to believe. Fantastic.' The Hall of Fame is already waiting for this great player.
