Thursday 9/1/2001: Seattle's Poehl earns Pitcher of the Month award
Seattle's pitcher Mike Poehl is the American League winner of the Pitcher of the Month award in August. He went 4-0 in August and finished the month with an ERA of 1.12. He struck out 29 in 40.1 innings. Mike got two complete game shutouts as well! His ERA of 2.61 helped him to a 14-6 record this year. He struck out 173 and walked 38 in 190 innings. Mike has pitched 4 shutouts and 4 complete games. Seattle's pitcher John Smoltz is the American League winner of the Pitcher of the Month award in August. He had an ERA of just 0.65 in 55 innings of work in which he struck out 66 hitters. His record in August is 6-1. John also fired a shutout. Opposing players hit .156 against John this season. His season features a batting average of .305 (145 hits in 475 AB), 26 doubles, one triple and 33 taters. Thomas collected 91 RBI and 87 runs as well. He's 5th in the American League in batting! Sammy Sosa of Milwaukee wins his 4th Batter of the Month award for putting up the best numbers in the National League. In 108 at bats he hit .417 with 6 HR and 25 RBI. Monday 8/29/2001: Damon (BOS) and Bagwell (HOU) win P.O.W. award
It's the 1st time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Boston's centerfielder Johnny Damon. In 25 at bats he hit .360 with 2 HR and 8 RBI. This year Damon drove in 72 and scored 94 runs while batting .275 with 26 taters. Jeff Bagwell from Houston wins his 3rd Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. Jeff went 9 for 25 (.360), while hitting 4 HR and collecting 7 RBI.
Sunday 8/28/2001: Jeff Russell fires 2-hitter against Texas
TORONTO - All you need to win is a dominating pitching performance. And Toronto's Jeff Russell did so today, in a 2-hit shutout against Texas. 'I'll have to give a lot of credit to my catcher. He put all the right fingers down today.' Russell (9-12) struck out 1 and issued 5 BB, throwing 52 of 96 pitches for strikes. Vinny Castilla helped Russell at the plate, he finished with 2 hits in 4 AB, and driving in 2 runs. Toronto scored 4 runs on 6 hits.
Sunday 8/28/2001: Oakland's Moehler severely injured
OAKLAND - Oakland is without its ace Brian Moehler for at least 4-5 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Cecil Fielder in a game against New York (A). His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. After being taken to a local hospital, Moehler was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Bone Chips Elbow. In 27 starts this year Brian struck out 110 batters in 133.1 innings of work. His ERA is 6.62, his record 6-15.
Saturday 8/27/2001: Mike Poehl pitches 2-hit shutout against Tampa Bay
SEATTLE - Great days are rare. But not for Seattle's right-hander Mike Poehl. Tampa Bay found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 4th shutout this season, and the 13th time he has done it in his career. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' Poehl (14-6) struck out 6 and walked none, throwing 54 of 89 pitches for strikes. Seattle's catcher Jay Buhner stroked 2 hits in 3 AB, hitting a double. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Poehl. Seattle improved its record to 76-54, scoring 3 runs on 9 hits.
Friday 8/26/2001: Roger Bailey NO-HITS Milwaukee
ARIZONA - Arizona's right-hander Roger Bailey made some history today, firing a no-hitter against Milwaukee. Their hitters found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, never having a chance against his overpowering stuff. Bailey (6-12) struck out 7 and issued 3 BB, throwing 63 of 106 pitches for strikes. 'My catcher called a very good game. I have to give credit to him. He was the main reason I accomplished this feat.' Steve R. Dunn provided Arizona with the offense Bailey needed as he went 2 for 4, going deep twice, scoring three runs with 3 RBI. Arizona improved its record to 39-90, scoring 6 runs on 11 hits.
Thursday 8/25/2001: New York (N) has no chance in a 2-hitter by John Smoltz
ATLANTA - Great days are rare. But not for Atlanta's right-hander John Smoltz. New York (N) found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 3rd shutout this season, and the 59th time he has done it in his career. Smoltz (16-2) was overpowering, fanning 10 while walking 1, throwing 117 pitches. 'Winning is the most important thing. And I gave my team all the support it needed!' Atlanta's second baseman Aaron Boone went 1 for 1, and driving in 2 runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Smoltz. The final score of the game was 3-0.
