Seattle's pitcher Kirk Rueter is the American League winner of the Pitcher of the Month award in September. He had an ERA of just 1.86 in 48.1 innings of work in which he struck out 25 hitters. Friday 9/30/2001: Jeff Weaver shuts out Florida on 2 hits
FLORIDA - Chicago (N)'s right-hander Jeff Weaver is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Florida on just 2 hits. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 2nd time he has done it in his career. 'Winning is the most important thing. And I gave my team all the support it needed!' Weaver (24-5) fanned 8 and walked 3, throwing 112 pitches. Chicago (N)'s first baseman Tony Clark went 1 for 4, hitting a homerun. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Weaver. Chicago (N) improved its record to 115-46, scoring 2 runs on 8 hits.
Friday 9/30/2001: Chicago (N)'s Ruiz severely injured
CHICAGO (N) - Chicago (N)'s catcher Carlos Ruiz suffered a serious injury when he was struck by a pitch from Florida's Tim Hudson. He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. Ruiz will probaby miss 7 weeks. Chicago (N) wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Ruiz had suffered a Broken Hand. His season features a batting average of .283 (132 hits in 466 AB), 32 doubles, 2 triples and 13 taters. Ruiz collected 80 RBI and 75 runs as well.
Friday 9/30/2001: Ray Lankford drills 5 hits
SAN FRANCISCO - Ray Lankford led St. Louis to a 16-5 win over San Francisco by squeezing five hits out of his bat. A triple off Shawn Hillegas in the 2nd inning, accounted for his 1st hit. Hit number 2 followed in the 4th inning, a RBI triple. A pitch from Kevin Foster in the 6th inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 420 feet from home plate in left-center. He collected singles in the 7th inning and in the 8th . Ray did drive in 2 while scoring 4 runs on his own. His 5 hit performance increases his batting average to .286.
Friday 9/30/2001: Minnesota's Derek Jeter slams five hits
MINNESOTA - Derek Jeter hits 'em where they ain't. Oakland certainly agrees as Minnesota's second baseman unloaded five hits, adding to his reputation of being one of the best pure hitters in the game. His 1st hit, off Brian Moehler in the 1st inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in left field. That one tied it at 1 runs apiece. A pitch from Brian Moehler in the 4th inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 389 feet from home plate in right field. A pitch from Scott Chiamparino in the 6th inning left his bat for a two-run double. He collected singles in the 2nd and in the 8th inning . Derek scored 4 runs, and he collected 4 RBI as well! Monday 9/26/2001: Hideo Nomo dominates Arizona, gives up just 2 hits
LOS ANGELES (N) - Los Angeles (N)'s right-hander Hideo Nomo is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Arizona on just 2 hits. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 14th time he has done it in his career. Nomo (21-8) struck out 9 and walked 1, throwing 81 of 117 pitches for strikes. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' Los Angeles (N)'s second baseman Jim Thome finished 1 for 4, homering once, and driving in 2 runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Nomo. The final score of the game was 4-0.
Monday 9/26/2001: Kansas City's Carpenter wins Player of the Week award
The American League's best player of the week was Kansas City's Chris Carpenter, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 0.50 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well. Cincinnati's centerfielder Carlos Beltran had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. Carlos pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .500 with 3 HR and 10 RBI while slugging 1.077. He has hit 28 longballs while batting .261 this season.
