OAKLAND - Sam Militello had some fun again. Oakland hitters did not. Minnesota's right-hander gave up just one hit in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 2 career shutouts in 95 games started. Militello (2-0) fanned 6 and walked 1, throwing 102 pitches. 'I had a good grip on the ball today and I was able to put it where I wanted. That kept them out of balance.' Melvin Nieves provided Minnesota with the offense Militello needed as he went 3 for 4, homering once, hitting a double, scoring twice. Minnesota scored 10 runs on 15 hits.
Wednesday 6/1/2002: Colby Lewis turns in great performance against San Diego
ARIZONA - Arizona's right-hander Colby Lewis didn't look unexperienced at all. The 22 year old pitched a 2-hit shutout against San Diego, recording his 1st shutout of the season. With no outs in the 5th inning Miguel Ojeda singled to break up the no-hitter. 'Things like that happen. You take the mound and everything works. My velocity was pretty good today and I guess it showed.' Lewis (4-0) showed excellent control, walking nobody and fanning 8. The hitting star for Arizona was first baseman Carlos Pena, he stroked 3 hits in 4 AB, homering once, and collecting 2 RBI. Arizona improved its record to 31-23, scoring 6 runs on 9 hits.
Wednesday 6/1/2002: Steve Phoenix pitches his 1st shutout of the season
CHICAGO (A) - Steve Phoenix had some fun again. California hitters did not. Chicago (A)'s right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 2 career shutouts in 135 games started. Phoenix (6-0) struck out 5 and walked 1, throwing 61 of 99 pitches for strikes. 'I had my stuff going. Everything I tried worked. What a day!' Wednesday 6/1/2002: Pitcher of the Month award winners announced
Winner of this months American League Pitcher of the Month award is Seattle's Paul Wagner. He started 6 games in May, going 5-0 and compiling an ERA of 1.07 in 50.2 innings. Paul fanned 42 hitters. Paul got two complete game shutouts as well! This season Wagner compiled an ERA of 1.97, going 6-1 in 11 starts. He fanned 77 while giving up 59 hits in 86.2 innings. He has 3 complete games and 2 shutouts. He's 3rd in the American League in ERA and 5th in wins! The best month of May in the National League certainly had Houston's right-hander Dwight Gooden, earning him the Pitcher of the Month award. He struck out 43 hitters in his 6 starts, putting together a record of 6-0 while pitching 43 innings. His ERA in May was 1.20. Dwight has a record of 9-2 this season, with an ERA of 1.14. It's the 4th time that the American League Batter of the Month award goes to Chicago (A)'s first baseman Frank E. Thomas. Thomas helped his team with an average of .365 and 29 RBI in 96 at bats. While compiling an on base percentage of .397, Frank E. hit .314 and slugged .628. He has collected 51 runs batted in this year. He's 8th in the American League in batting, 7th in homeruns and 1st in RBI! It's the 1st time that the National League Batter of the Month award goes to Cincinnati's centerfielder Aubrey Huff. In 90 at bats he hit .322 with 10 HR and 21 RBI. He has hit 11 homeruns while batting .278 this season. His 42 hits and 15 walks add up to a .349 on-base percentage.
Monday 5/30/2002: Aramis Ramirez (HOU) will miss 5-6 weeks
HOUSTON - Houston's Aramis Ramirez suffered a serious injury Monday in a game against Pittsburgh. Ramirez fell down while running the bases and couldn't get up without help. He will miss probably 5-6 weeks. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Broken Foot. His season features a batting average of .240 (46 hits in 192 AB), 13 doubles, no triples and 7 longballs. Ramirez collected 39 RBI and 21 runs as well.
Monday 5/30/2002: Sheffield and Oliver win Player of the Week award
Gary Sheffield from Tampa Bay wins his 8th Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the American League. He hit .550 with 5 RBI and slugged 1.300 in 20 at bats. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 9 games. His season features a batting average of .372 (68 hits in 183 AB), 14 doubles, 4 triples and 20 bombs. Sheffield collected 44 RBI and 44 runs as well. He's 2nd in the American League in batting, 1st in homeruns and 3rd in RBI! The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to Colorado's Darren Oliver this time, as the pitcher displayed the best pitching perfomance in his league. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 0.52 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well.
Saturday 5/28/2002: Darren Oliver turns in great performance against Arizona
COLORADO - Colorado's lefty Darren Oliver is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Arizona found out the hard way, getting just one hit. Oliver 1st shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 4th shutouts in his career. 'Today I just felt fine. I had a good feeling while warming up.' Oliver (7-3) fanned 5 and walked 2, throwing 105 pitches. The hitting star for Colorado was designated hitter Todd Helton, he went 4 for 5, hitting 2 doubles, scoring three times and driving in 5 runs. Colorado scored 15 runs on 17 hits.
Friday 5/27/2002: Texas has no chance in a NO-HITTER by Sam Militello
MINNESOTA - With his best stuff going, Minnesota's Sam Militello overmatched the opposing hitters all day long. Texas had no chance, getting NO hits against the right-hander. Sean Casey spoiled the bid for a perfect game when he was hit by a pitch with no outs in the 6th inning. Militello (1-0) struck out 2 and walked 3, throwing 59 of 104 pitches for strikes. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' Minnesota's leftfielder Melvin Nieves collected 2 hits in 4 trips to the plate, homering twice, scoring 2 runs with 4 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Militello. Minnesota improved its record to 40-10, scoring 12 runs on 14 hits.
Thursday 5/26/2002: Huge blow for New York (N)'s Nichols, career over
NEW YORK (N) - It was one of baseball saddest days. New York (N)'s right-hander Rod Nichols fell victim to a career ending injury in a game against Milwaukee on Thursday. He complained about pain after throwing a pitch to Sammy Sosa, then suddenly collapsed. New York (N) wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Nichols had suffered a Torn Ligament Elbow. This season Nichols compiled an ERA of 9.82, going 0-6 in 8 starts. He fanned 34 while giving up 50 hits in 33 innings. His career featured a record of 49-96 with an ERA of 5.30. Baseball will certainly miss this great player.
Thursday 5/26/2002: Cliff Brantley out for 5 weeks
MINNESOTA - Minnesota is without its right-hander Cliff Brantley for at least 5 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Carlos Delgado in a game against Texas. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Strained Elbow Ligament. Opposing players hit .203 against Cliff this season. While posting an ERA of 3.03 he went 4-1 in 10 starts, fanning 36 and walking 29 hitters.
