Monday 4/18/2004: Player of the Week honors go to Hamelin and Plantier
Bob Hamelin wins his 3rd Player of the Week award. American League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Bob went 14 for 23 (.609), while hitting 3 HR and collecting 11 RBI. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 7 game hitting streak right now. The National League Player of the Week award goes to Phil Plantier, St. Louis' starting leftfielder. In 18 at bats he hit .500 with 4 HR and 9 RBI. His season features a batting average of .400 (20 hits in 50 AB), 6 doubles, no triples and 6 homeruns. Plantier collected 16 RBI and 14 runs as well. He's 6th in the National League in batting, 2nd in homeruns and 4th in RBI!
Friday 4/15/2004: Baltimore's Guillen severely injured
BALTIMORE - Baltimore's third baseman Carlos Guillen will miss at least 6-7 weeks after he got hurt seriously while running hard toward second base. He began limping and then fell down, causing a scary moment for his teammates. He had to be carried off the field. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Broken Foot.
Wednesday 4/13/2004: Kansas City's Bell severely injured
KANSAS CITY - Being hit with a pitch is no fun at all. Especially when you get injured. Kansas City's leftfielder Derek Bell will miss about 5-6 weeks after being hit by Brian Moehler in the 3rd inning of the game between Kansas City and Oakland. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Fractured Wrist which will require surgery.
Monday 4/11/2004: Pittsburgh's Paul Konerko laces five hits
PITTSBURGH - Paul Konerko hits 'em where they ain't. Milwaukee certainly agrees as Pittsburgh's designated hitter unloaded five hits, adding to his reputation of being one of the best pure hitters in the game. Number 1 in the 1st inning, a shot estimated at 399 feet, cleared the wall in right field. His 3rd hit, off Armando Almanza in the 4th inning, was a three-run homerun and cleared the fence in right field. He collected singles in the 3rd (one RBI) , in the 4th inning (one RBI) and in the 6th (one RBI). Paul scored 3 runs, and he collected 8 RBI as well! This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 18 hits in 36 at bats, resulting in a .500 batting average. Pittsburgh scored 27 runs on 28 hits.

CINCINNATI - Cincinnati's centerfielder Carlos Beltran will miss about 5-6 weeks after he hurt himself badly in the 8th inning of the game between Cincinnati and Houston. He dove for a drive off the bat of Rob Richie, and immediately signaled that he's not OK after hitting the ground. Beltran was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Spasms Back.
Monday 4/11/2004: Alomar and DeShields win Player of the Week award
The American League's best player of the week was Chicago (A)'s Roberto Alomar, who wins the award for the 9th time in his career. Roberto pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .563 with 2 HR and 4 RBI while slugging .781. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 8 game hitting streak right now. His season features a batting average of .528 (19 hits in 36 AB), 2 doubles, no triples and 2 longballs. Alomar collected 4 RBI and 8 runs as well. He's 1st in the American League in batting! The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to St. Louis' Delino DeShields this time, as the shortstop displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Delino pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .484 with 1 HR and 9 RBI while slugging .839. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 7 game hitting streak right now. DeShields has hit for a .455 average this season. He has 5 extra base hits along with 26 total bases, resulting in a .788 slugging percentage. He's 3rd in the National League in batting and 7th in RBI!
Thursday 4/7/2004: Miguel Ojeda drills 5 hits
PHILADELPHIA - Miguel Ojeda punished Philadelphia's pitching today, collecting five hits in 6 AB. That definitely helped Atlanta, they won the game 21 to 0. His 1st hit, a two-run homerun off Greg Swindell in the 1st inning, cleared the fence in left field. A double off Michael Smith in the 6th inning accounted for his 3rd hit. A 390 foot drive to left field marked his 4th hit, a two-run homerun off Michael Smith in the 7th inning. He collected singles in the 4th (two RBIs) and in the 9th (one RBI). Miguel did drive in 7 while scoring 4 runs on his own. He's having a very good season so far, batting .450.
