Saturday 10/1/2006: Minnesota's Nen earns Pitcher of the Month award
It's the 9th time that the American League Pitcher of the Month award goes to Minnesota's pitcher Robb Nen. He started 6 games in September, going 5-1 and compiling an ERA of 1.80 in 45 innings. Robb fanned 35 hitters. Robb pitched a shutout as well. This season Nen compiled an ERA of 2.12, going 27-5 in 36 starts. He fanned 235 while giving up 206 hits in 275.2 innings. He has 5 complete games and 3 shutouts. He's 1st in the American League in ERA and 1st in wins! Ben Sheets couldn't have pitched much better than he did in September, and the National League thought so as well, naming the right-hander Pitcher of the Month. The American League's best player of the month was Detroit's Bengie Molina, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. Bengie went 42 for 91 (.462), while hitting 5 HR and collecting 18 RBI. He has hit 23 taters while batting .380 this season. His 213 hits and 59 walks add up to a .442 on-base percentage. He's 1st in the American League in batting! It's the 1st time that the National League Batter of the Month award goes to St. Louis' first baseman Brad Fullmer. Brad pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .349 with 11 and 29 RBI while slugging .725. Brad has gone 179 for 608 (.294) this season, hitting 45 taters and driving in 146 runs. He has scored 105 runs on his own. He's 2nd in the National League in RBIs and 2nd in homeruns!
Friday 9/30/2006: Jeff Weaver turns in great performance against New York (N)
NEW YORK (N) - Jeff Weaver took the mound and never left. And New York (N) hitters couldn't touch him at all. Chicago (N)'s right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 6th shutout of the season. He now has 16 career shutouts in 195 games started. Weaver (23-8) was overpowering, fanning 10 while walking none, throwing 110 pitches. 'I had my stuff going. Everything I tried worked. What a day!' The hitting star for Chicago (N) was rightfielder Shane Victorino, he finished with 2 hits in 4 AB, hitting a homerun, and driving in 2 runs. Chicago (N) scored 5 runs on 8 hits.
Monday 9/26/2006: Washington's Lohse severely injured
WASHINGTON - Washington's right-hander Kyle Lohse suffered a severe injury on Monday and will be out for at least 5-6 weeks. In the 8th of the game against Cincinnati he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Inflamed Rotator Cuff Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. This season Lohse compiled an ERA of 6.87, going 3-5 in 0 starts. He fanned 42 while giving up 96 hits in 73.1 innings.
Monday 9/26/2006: Player of the Week honors go to Beltre and Guerrero
The American League's best player of the week was Seattle's Adrian Beltre, who wins the award for the 2nd time in his career. Adrian went 15 for 27 (.556), while hitting 3 HR and collecting 6 RBI. Vladimir Guerrero from Washington wins his 10th Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. LOS ANGELES (A) - Los Angeles (A) is without its right-hander David Nied for at least 5-6 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to David Dellucci in a game against Baltimore. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. After being taken to a local hospital, Nied was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Inflamed Rotator Cuff Muscle. Opposing players hit .351 against David this season. While posting an ERA of 6.70 he went 4-19 in 27 starts, fanning 78 and walking 40 hitters.
