Wednesday 6/1/2007: San Francisco's Jim Thome ropes five hits
PITTSBURGH - San Francisco's first baseman Jim Thome accomplished a difficult feat in a 14-4 win over Pittsburgh, drilling five hits to improve his career batting average to .281! In the 1st inning he belted a two-run double off Brian Tollberg. A 396 foot drive to right field marked his 3rd hit, a two-run homerun off Bob Wickman in the 6th inning. His 4th cleared the based, a three-run double off Fernando Rodney in the 7th inning. He collected singles in the 4th (one RBI) and in the 9th . Jim did drive in 8 while scoring 3 runs on his own. His 5 hit performance increases his batting average to .283. San Francisco scored 14 runs on 18 hits.
Wednesday 6/1/2007: Milwaukee's Webb named Pitcher of the Month
It's the 1st time that the American League Pitcher of the Month award goes to Toronto's pitcher Josh Johnson. He struck out 37 hitters in his 5 starts, putting together a record of 3-1 while pitching 37 innings. His ERA in May was 0.69. Josh pitched a shutout as well. His ERA of 2.34 helped him to a 5-3 record this year. He struck out 61 and walked 20 in 69.1 innings. Josh has pitched 2 shutouts and 2 complete games. The best month of May in the National League certainly had Milwaukee's right-hander Brandon Webb, earning him the Pitcher of the Month award. He struck out 41 hitters in his 6 starts, putting together a record of 3-1 while pitching 41 innings. His ERA in May was 0.68. Brandon got two complete game shutouts as well! It's the 2nd time that the American League Batter of the Month award goes to Baltimore's shortstop Edwin Encarnacion. In 101 at bats he hit .386 with 7 HR and 23 RBI. Edwin is hitting .337 this year, with 66 hits in 196 at bats. He has driven in 42 runs, slugging .597. He's 8th in the American League in batting, 4th in homeruns and 10th in RBI! St. Louis' first baseman Brad Fullmer had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Batter of the Month. Brad went 38 for 105 (.362), while hitting 10 HR and collecting 28 RBI. This year Fullmer drove in 39 and scored 37 runs while batting .299 with 14 longballs. He's 6th in the National League in RBIs and 2nd in homeruns!
Tuesday 5/31/2007: Chad Billingsley dominates Pittsburgh, gives up just one hit
PITTSBURGH - San Francisco's right-hander Chad Billingsley is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Pittsburgh on just one hit. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 2nd time he has done it in his career. 'Today I just felt fine. I had a good feeling while warming up.' Billingsley (8-3) was overpowering, fanning 10 while walking 1, throwing 92 pitches. San Francisco's shortstop Mark Loretta collected 2 hits in 5 trips to the plate, blasting a homerun. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Billingsley. The final score of the game was 3-0.
Monday 5/30/2007: Jones and Webb win Player of the Week award
The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to Detroit's Chipper Jones this time, as the third baseman displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. He had an on base percentage of .727 and hit .647, while driving in 6 runs. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to Milwaukee's Brandon Webb this time, as the pitcher displayed the best pitching perfomance in his league. Brandon went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.00, while fanning 14 in 18 innings of work. He pitched two shutouts! In 12 starts this year Brandon struck out 77 batters in 94.2 innings of work. His ERA is 1.71, his record 7-3. Brandon has pitched 2 shutouts and 5 complete games. He's 3rd in the National League in ERA and 5th in wins!
Saturday 5/28/2007: Pittsburgh has no chance in a 2-hitter by Adam Wainwright
PITTSBURGH - St. Louis' right-hander Adam Wainwright is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Pittsburgh found out the hard way, getting just 2 hits. Wainwright 1st shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 4th shutouts in his career. With no outs in the 7th inning Marco Scutaro singled to break up the no-hitter. Wainwright (4-5) struck out 4 and issued 1 BB, throwing 59 of 90 pitches for strikes. 'Things like that happen. You take the mound and everything works. My velocity was pretty good today and I guess it showed.' J.D. Drew helped Wainwright at the plate, he stroked 2 hits in 4 AB, stroking a double. St. Louis scored 2 runs on 6 hits.
Saturday 5/28/2007: Royce Clayton punishes Houston with four hits, cycle
HOUSTON - Florida's shortstop Royce Clayton once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up Houston's pitching staff with a 4 hit performance on Saturday. His 1st hit was a triple off Bronson Arroyo in the 3rd inning. A single in the 4th off Bronson Arroyo accounted for his 2nd hit. His 3rd hit, off Bronson Arroyo in the 7th inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in left-center. Number 4 in the 8th inning accounted for a double. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Royce scored 2 runs, and he collected 2 RBI as well! He now has a total of 54 hits this season, accounting for a .276 batting average. He becomes the 128th player in league history collect at least a single, double, triple and a homerun in a single game. On 5/4/2007, Alex Rios was the last player to hit for the cycle.
Friday 5/27/2007: C.C. Sabathia (COL) will miss 5-6 weeks
COLORADO - Colorado's left-hander C.C. Sabathia suffered a severe injury on Friday and will be out for at least 5-6 weeks. In the 5th of the game against San Diego he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Sabathia was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Pulled Rotator Cuff Muscle. In 10 starts this year C.C. struck out 53 batters in 65 innings of work. His ERA is 3.32, his record 5-3. He has one complete game and one shutout.

SAN DIEGO - San Diego's season has taken a hit after one of their best players, first baseman Ryan Howard, injured himself while rounding a base. He is likely to miss 5 weeks.
