Monday 7/4/2007: Player of the Week honors go to Damon and Polanco
Boston's rightfielder Johnny Damon had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. Johnny pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .438 with 3 HR and 9 RBI while slugging 1.063. Johnny has gone 103 for 321 (.321) this season, hitting 18 longballs and driving in 81 runs. He has scored 57 runs on his own. He's 2nd in the American League in RBIs and 7th in homeruns! Placido Polanco from Arizona wins his 1st Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. Placido was on fire, hitting .444 with 1 HR and 4 RBI. Polanco has hit for a .358 average this season. He has 15 extra base hits along with 115 total bases, resulting in a .442 slugging percentage. He's 2nd in the National League in batting!
Friday 7/1/2007: Pitcher of the Month award winners announced
Darryl Kile pitched like a legend in June, and the American League named him Pitcher of the Month for his extraordinary performance. He struck out 17 hitters in his 5 starts, putting together a record of 4-0 while pitching 17 innings. His ERA in June was 0.33. Darryl also fired a shutout. In 16 starts this year Darryl struck out 50 batters in 90.1 innings of work. His ERA is 4.18, his record 7-6. Darryl has pitched one shutout and one complete game. Greg Maddux couldn't have pitched much better than he did in June, and the National League thought so as well, naming the right-hander Pitcher of the Month. It's the 4th time that the American League Batter of the Month award goes to Detroit's first baseman Miguel Cabrera. His 107 hits and 32 walks add up to a .423 on-base percentage. He's 1st in the American League in batting and 3rd in RBI! The National League Batter of the Month award goes to Jim Thome, San Francisco's starting first baseman. He hit .356 with 28 RBI and slugged .762 in 101 at bats. Wednesday 6/29/2007: San Diego has no chance in a 2-hitter by Greg Maddux
ATLANTA - Age doesn't matter. At least Atlanta's right-hander Greg Maddux shares this opinion. The 41 year old pitched a 2-hit shutout against San Diego, recording his 2nd shutout of the season. 'Wow, what a nice day. I guess I had a good breakfast today.' Maddux (14-5) struck out 4 and walked none, throwing 56 of 96 pitches for strikes. Aaron Boone provided Atlanta with the offense Maddux needed as he collected 2 hits in 4 trips to the plate, blasting a homerun, and driving in 3 runs. The final score of the game was 6-0.
Tuesday 6/28/2007: Colorado's Lee severely injured
COLORADO - Colorado's leftfielder Carlos Lee will miss at least 5 weeks after he got hurt seriously while running hard toward second base. He began limping and then fell down, causing a scary moment for his teammates. He had to be carried off the field. After being taken to a local hospital, Lee was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Fractured Knee. Carlos is hitting .255 this year, with 76 hits in 298 at bats. He has driven in 48 runs, slugging .487.
