Monday 8/15/2007: Arizona's Wells wins Player of the Week award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Chipper Jones, Detroit's starting third baseman. Chipper was on fire, hitting .577 with 1 HR and 10 RBI. It's the 2nd time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to Arizona's centerfielder Vernon Wells. He hit .385 with 14 RBI and slugged .808 in 26 at bats. His season features a batting average of .211 (94 hits in 445 AB), 26 doubles, 4 triples and 20 longballs. Wells collected 94 RBI and 72 runs as well.
Saturday 8/13/2007: Bruce Aven found the stroke, smashes three homers
SAN DIEGO - Bruce Aven can hit'em a long way, and Florida pitchers couldn't smile about that today. San Diego's designated hitter unloaded three bombs, adding to his reputation of being one of the best power hitters in the game. In the 1st inning he unloaded a two-run homerun off Gabe White. His 2nd shot, off Gabe White in the 3rd inning, was a solo homerun and cleared the fence in center field. A 399 foot drive to right-center marked his 3rd bomb, a solo homerun off Rod Beck in the 10th inning. That one even won the game for his team! Overall he got 4 hits in 5 AB, with three runs scored with 4 RBI. The final score of the game was 5-4.
Saturday 8/13/2007: Jim Edmonds slams 500th homerun
BOSTON - Boston's centerfielder Jim Edmonds was in good mood after the game against New York (A), and he had every reason as he made baseball history while collecting his 500th career homerun. Perhaps his best year so far was 1998 where he hit .272 with 36 homeruns and 110 RBI. Jim has managed to hit 30+ homeruns in a season 8 times, and he topped 40 homeruns 2 times. 'I still remember my first hit. But the one today is something special. I'll definitely keep that ball!' A pitch from Bobby J. Jones in the 3rd inning left his bat for a two-run homerun, landing 391 feet from home plate in right field. The Hall of Fame already has reserved a place for this great player.
Friday 8/12/2007: A.J. Burnett blanks Toronto with a 1-hitter
SEATTLE - A.J. Burnett took the mound and never left. And Toronto hitters couldn't touch him at all. Seattle's right-hander gave up just one hit in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 8 career shutouts in 216 games started. Burnett (12-8) was overpowering, fanning 11 while walking none, throwing 116 pitches. 'I felt early that I was on top of my game. Fortunately I was able to keep that feeling the entire game.' Seattle's shortstop Mike B. Young stroked 2 hits in 4 AB. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Burnett. Seattle improved its record to 68-48, scoring 3 runs on 6 hits.
Tuesday 8/9/2007: Houston's Tejada severely injured
HOUSTON - New York (N)'s Gary Glover drilled Houston's shortstop Miguel Tejada in the 5th inning. He was slow getting up and had to leave the game. Miguel Tejada will miss at least 6 weeks. Tejada was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Fractured Hand. He has hit 7 longballs while batting .225 this season. His 75 hits and 37 walks add up to a .314 on-base percentage.
Monday 8/8/2007: Colorado's Lee wins Player of the Week award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Adrian Beltre, Seattle's starting third baseman. Adrian was on fire, hitting .444 with 4 HR and 7 RBI. He now has homered in 4 consecutive games as well! His season numbers are: .323 AVG, 140 hits, 22 doubles, no triples and 17 longballs, along with 61 RBI and 74 runs scored. It's the 7th time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to Colorado's leftfielder Carlos Lee. He hit .400 with 10 RBI and slugged .960 in 25 at bats. Carlos has gone 86 for 323 (.266) this season, hitting 18 bombs and driving in 58 runs. He has scored 52 runs on his own.
