The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to Detroit's Russell Branyan this time, as the rightfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. In 20 at bats he hit .500 with 6 HR and 8 RBI. Branyan has hit 6 homeruns this year while batting .340. He adds one double, along with 12 runs scored. Philadelphia's catcher Carlos Ruiz had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. Carlos was on fire, hitting .550 with 3 HR and 11 RBI. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 7 games.
Sunday 4/17/2009: Los Angeles (N)'s Cliff Floyd mashes five hits
LOS ANGELES (N) - On Sunday, Los Angeles (N)'s rightfielder Cliff Floyd displayed his sensational ability to handle the bat against Milwaukee, punishing their pitchers with five hits. A pitch from Ross Ohlendorf in the 1st inning left his bat for a double. Number 3 in the 4th inning, a shot estimated at 439 feet, cleared the wall in right-center. A two-run double off Ron Mahay in the 6th inning accounted for his 4th hit. He collected singles in the 3rd inning and in the 8th inning . Cliff did drive in 4 while scoring 2 runs on his own. PITTSBURGH - When it rains, it pours. Pittsburgh's right-hander Miguel Asencio will not pitch for at least 7 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Philadelphia where he left the field in the 6th inning. Pittsburgh wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Asencio had suffered a Ruptured Elbow Ligament. Miguel has a record of 0-1 this season, with an ERA of 4.34. In 18.2 Innings he was able to strike out 10 batters.
Friday 4/15/2009: Brian Wolfe (MIL) will miss 4 weeks

TORONTO - When it rains, it pours. Toronto's right-hander Delvin James will not pitch for at least 8 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Seattle where he left the field in the 4th inning. Toronto wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that James had suffered a Pulled Tricep Muscle. His ERA of 6.19 helped him to a 1-0 record this year. He struck out 7 and walked 5 in 16 innings.
Monday 4/11/2009: St. Louis' Chavez wins Player of the Week award

'I really like to play baseball, and I love the way I was able to play it today.' Perez (2-0) struck out 7 and issued 1 BB, throwing 62 of 94 pitches for strikes. Vernon Wells provided Arizona with the offense Perez needed as he got 2 hits in 4 AB, going deep twice, scoring 2 runs and driving in 4 runs. Arizona scored 7 runs on 11 hits.
Sunday 4/10/2009: Baltimore's Edgardo Alfonzo laces 2000th career hit
KANSAS CITY - Baltimore's rightfielder Edgardo Alfonzo joined some elite company today, collecting his 2000th career hit! In 14 years of big league action so far, Edgardo has compiled a batting average of .265, along with 324 homeruns and 1247 RBI. 'Baseball is a great game, and adding something to it's history is smething I've always wanted. What a great day!' With two outs in the 3rd inning, Edgardo drilled a single, causing a standing ovation from the crowd.
Thursday 4/7/2009: Atlanta's Barker severely injured
ATLANTA - Atlanta's season has taken a hit after one of their best players, first baseman Kevin Barker, injured himself while rounding a base. He is likely to miss 4-5 weeks. Barker was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Pulled Achilles Tendon.
