Monday 4/25/2009: Oakland's Gonzalez wins Player of the Week award
The American League's best player of the week was Oakland's Adrian Gonzalez, who wins the award for the 3rd time in his career. Adrian was on fire, hitting .407 with 3 HR and 12 RBI. The National League Player of the Week award goes to Matt Kemp, Philadelphia's starting leftfielder. In 28 at bats he hit .464 with 4 HR and 12 RBI. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 7 games.
Saturday 4/23/2009: Zach Day (ARZ) will miss 5-6 weeks
ARIZONA - Arizona's right-hander Zach Day suffered a severe injury on Saturday and will be out for at least 5-6 weeks. In the 2nd of the game against San Francisco he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Arizona wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Day had suffered a Strained Back Muscle.
Friday 4/22/2009: Chris R. Young quiets Chicago (N) bats with shutout
CHICAGO (N) - Chris R. Young took the mound and never left. And Chicago (N) hitters couldn't touch him at all. Philadelphia's right-hander gave up just one hit in his 1st shutout of the season. He now has 7 career shutouts in 220 games started. 'I'll have to give a lot of credit to my catcher. He put all the right fingers down today.' Young (3-0) struck out 7 and issued 1 BB, throwing 59 of 97 pitches for strikes. Matt Kemp helped Young at the plate, he got 2 hits in 5 AB, hitting a homerun, and collecting 3 RBI. The final score of the game was 4-0.
Thursday 4/21/2009: Minnesota's Howard out for 5 weeks
MINNESOTA - Being hit with a pitch is no fun at all. Especially when you get injured. Minnesota's first baseman Ryan Howard will miss about 5 weeks after being hit by Justin Hampson in the 8th inning of the game between Minnesota and Boston. Minnesota wasted no time and rushed him to an hospital. Team officials were informed later that Howard had suffered a Broken Finger. This year Howard drove in 4 and scored 6 runs while batting .156 with 2 longballs.
Tuesday 4/19/2009: Josh Johnson dominates New York (A), gives up just 2 hits
TORONTO - Toronto's lefty Josh Johnson is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking New York (A) on just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 5th time he has done it in his career. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' Johnson (2-1) struck out 9 and issued 1 BB, throwing 68 of 105 pitches for strikes. Toronto's leftfielder Alex Gordon stroked 4 hits in 5 AB, hitting a double, scoring 2 runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Johnson. Toronto improved its record to 11-5, scoring 9 runs on 15 hits
