Wednesday 6/1/2009: Johnson and Park receive Pitcher of the Month award
Toronto's Josh Johnson had a terrific May, and it earned him the American League Pitcher of the month award. He went 5-0 in May and finished the month with an ERA of 1.35. He struck out 41 in 46.2 innings. Josh pitched a shutout as well. Josh has a record of 7-2 this season, with an ERA of 1.88. In 86 Innings he was able to strike out 71 batters. Josh has pitched 2 shutouts and 3 complete games. He's 2nd in the American League in ERA and 5th in wins! It's the 5th time that the National League Pitcher of the Month award goes to Arizona's pitcher Chan Ho Park. He started 6 games in May, going 6-0 and compiling an ERA of 1.25 in 50.1 innings. Tuesday 5/31/2009: Felipe Paulino fires 1-hitter against San Diego
LOS ANGELES (N) - Los Angeles (N)'s right-hander Felipe Paulino will never forget this day. The 25-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 1-hitter, against San Diego on Tuesday. Paulino (4-4) was overpowering, fanning 12 while walking 1, throwing 105 pitches. 'I'll have to give a lot of credit to my catcher. He put all the right fingers down today.' Los Angeles (N)'s centerfielder Jeff Francoeur collected 3 hits in 4 trips to the plate, hitting a double, and driving in 2 runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Paulino. Los Angeles (N) improved its record to 26-27, scoring 7 runs on 11 hits.
Tuesday 5/31/2009: Justin Verlander shuts out Texas on 2 hits
DETROIT - Great days are rare. But not for Detroit's right-hander Justin Verlander. Texas found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 8th time he has done it in his career. Verlander (6-1) fanned 6 and walked 3, throwing 89 pitches. 'I didn't feel that I had good stuff while warming up. But it got better the more I threw the ball. I guess I was lucky.' Marty Malloy helped Verlander at the plate, he went 3 for 4, with 2 RBI. Detroit improved its record to 36-17, scoring 8 runs on 13 hits.
Monday 5/30/2009: Philadelphia's Sheets wins Player of the Week award
Baltimore's pitcher Kerry Wood had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 0.00 while going 2-0. This season Wood compiled an ERA of 1.77, going 8-1 in 10 starts. He fanned 81 while giving up 43 hits in 76.1 innings. Kerry has pitched one shutout and 4 complete games. After pitching in the 2nd inning of the game against Chicago (N), Arroyo complained about serious pain in his throwing arm. He had to leave the game. After being taken to a local hospital, Arroyo was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Torn Ligament Elbow. Bronson has a record of 1-0 this season, with an ERA of 1.86. In 9.2 Innings he was able to strike out 10 batters.

CHICAGO (A) - Ryan Webb took the mound and never left. And Los Angeles (A) hitters couldn't touch him at all. Chicago (A)'s right-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 4 career shutouts in 74 games started. Webb (7-0) struck out 9 and walked 3, throwing 75 of 128 pitches for strikes. 'That was one of the best games of my career. I had my stuff working very well today.' Wilin Rosario provided Chicago (A) with the offense Webb needed as he finished 2 for 4, going deep twice, scoring two runs and collecting 3 RBI. NEW YORK (N) - Magglio Ordonez got a standing ovation from 20113 fans in New York (N), who witnessed his 2000th career hit. His best year so far was 2000 where he hit .344 with 17 homeruns and 96 RBI. 'I still remember my first hit. But the one today is something special. I'll definitely keep that ball!' He hit a single in the 9th off Kyle Farnsworth for number 2000.
Wednesday 5/25/2009: Dustin McGowan quiets Kansas City bats with shutout
KANSAS CITY - Chicago (A)'s right-hander Dustin McGowan will never forget this day. The 27-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 1-hitter, against Kansas City on Wednesday. 'Well, the ball went where I wanted it. I was able to hit the corners with all of my pitches.' McGowan (5-4) struck out an astounding 13 and walked 1, throwing 67 of 104 pitches for strikes. Dioner Navarro helped McGowan at the plate, he collected 1 hit in 4 trips to the plate. Chicago (A) scored 2 runs on 7 hits.
