Wednesday 6/8/2009: Charlie A. Morton quiets Washington bats with shutout
CHICAGO (N) - Chicago (N)'s right-hander Charlie A. Morton is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Washington on just 2 hits. It's his 3rd shutout this season, and the 5th time he has done it in his career. Morton (11-3) struck out an astounding 14 and walked 2, throwing 79 of 124 pitches for strikes. 'Well, the ball went where I wanted it. I was able to hit the corners with all of my pitches.' Chicago (N)'s rightfielder Luke Scott collected 1 hit in 4 trips to the plate. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Morton. Chicago (N) scored 2 runs on 5 hits.
Wednesday 6/8/2009: Seattle's Adrian Beltre mashes five hits
NEW YORK (A) - Adrian Beltre is among the best pure hitters in the game, but his 5 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself. A pitch from Roy Oswalt in the 6th inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 464 feet from home plate in center field. A pitch from Brian Shackelford in the 7th inning left his bat for a three-run double. A double off Sergio Santos in the 9th inning accounted for his 5th hit. He collected singles in the 1st and in the 7th inning (one RBI). Adrian did drive in 5 while scoring 4 runs on his own. He now has a total of 73 hits this season, accounting for a .305 batting average. Seattle scored 21 runs on 18 hits.
Wednesday 6/8/2009: Jeff Weaver quiets New York (A) bats with shutout
NEW YORK (A) - Seattle's right-hander Jeff Weaver is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking New York (A) on just 2 hits. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 29th time he has done it in his career. Weaver (6-4) struck out 7 and walked none, throwing 76 of 115 pitches for strikes. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' The hitting star for Seattle was first baseman Craig Brazell, he went 4 for 5, homering twice, hitting a double, scoring 2 runs with 8 RBI. Seattle scored 21 runs on 18 hits.
Tuesday 6/7/2009: Chipper Jones slams 600th homerun
BOSTON - Chipper Jones got a standing ovation from 46996 fans in Boston, who witnessed his historic 600th career homerun. In the 7th inning he unloaded his 600th blast off Scott Atchison. Perhaps his best year so far was 1999 where he hit .350 with 45 homeruns and 125 RBI. Chipper hit 30+ homeruns in a season 12 times, hitting 40 bombs 6 times. 'My firends always told me that I will do it one day. I never believed it. Good that I was wrong!' It's no secret that he will one day be in the Hall of Fame!
Monday 6/6/2009: Ethier and Perez win Player of the Week award
The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to Tampa Bay's Andre Ethier this time, as the rightfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Ethier helped his team with an average of .613 and 14 RBI in 31 at bats. It's the 1st time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to Arizona's pitcher Odalis Perez. Odalis went 2-0 with an ERA of 0.00, while fanning 12 in 17.1 innings of work. He hurled a shutout as well.

I guess I was lucky.' Morton (10-3) struck out 6 and issued 1 BB, throwing 62 of 105 pitches for strikes. Joe Mauer provided Chicago (N) with the offense Morton needed as he stroked 1 hit in 4 AB, and collecting 2 RBI. Chicago (N) scored 3 runs on 5 hits.
Friday 6/3/2009: Bud Smith pitches 1-hit shutout against Philadelphia
PHILADELPHIA - Bud Smith had some fun again. Philadelphia hitters did not. Atlanta's lefty gave up just one hit in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 17 career shutouts in 213 games started. With no outs in the 6th inning Jeff Bailey singled to break up the no-hitter. Smith (8-4) fanned 4 and walked none, throwing 93 pitches. 'I felt early that I was on top of my game. Fortunately I was able to keep that feeling the entire game.' Atlanta's designated hitter Shawn Green finished 1 for 3, blasting a homerun, and collecting 3 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Smith. The final score of the game was 4-0.
Thursday 6/2/2009: Oakland's Lidge severely injured
OAKLAND - Oakland's right-hander Brad Lidge experienced probably the worst case scenario for a pitcher, a season ending injury. After pitching in the 7th inning of the game against Chicago (A), Lidge complained about serious pain in his throwing arm. He had to leave the game. Lidge was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Torn Rotator Cuff Muscle. This season Lidge compiled an ERA of 4.81, going 3-3 in 0 starts. He fanned 40 while giving up 30 hits in 33.2 innings.
