Cleveland's catcher Victor Martinez had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. Victor was on fire, hitting .588 with 4 HR and 12 RBI. Luke Scott from Chicago (N) wins his 2nd Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the National League. He had an on base percentage of .667 and hit .625, while driving in 8 runs. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 7 games.
Friday 7/1/2009: Wood (BAL) and Liriano (COL) win monthly pitcher award
Baltimore's pitcher Kerry Wood is the American League winner of the Pitcher of the Month award in June. He went 5-0 in June and finished the month with an ERA of 1.00. He struck out 41 in 45 innings. His ERA of 1.48 helped him to a 13-1 record this year. He struck out 122 and walked 17 in 121.1 innings. He has 4 complete games and one shutout. He's 1st in the American League in ERA and 1st in wins! Colorado's Francisco Liriano had a terrific June, and it earned him the National League Pitcher of the month award. While compiling an on base percentage of .354, Luke hit .304 and slugged .583. He has collected 62 runs batted in this year. Monday 6/27/2009: Texas has no chance in a 2-hitter by Kelvim Escobar
TEXAS - Cleveland's right-hander Kelvim Escobar is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Texas on just 2 hits. It's his 3rd shutout this season, and the 8th time he has done it in his career. Escobar (11-3) fanned 9 and walked 1, throwing 105 pitches. 'I'll have to give a lot of credit to my catcher. He put all the right fingers down today.' Cleveland's first baseman Victor Martinez collected 3 hits in 4 trips to the plate, homering once, scoring three runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Escobar. Cleveland improved its record to 48-30, scoring 9 runs on 13 hits.
Monday 6/27/2009: Houston's Wilson wins Player of the Week award
The American League's best player of the week was Detroit's Russell Branyan, who wins the award for the 5th time in his career. Russell was on fire, hitting .409 with 5 HR and 10 RBI. Branyan has hit for a .300 average this season. He has 48 extra base hits along with 199 total bases, resulting in a .718 slugging percentage. NEW YORK (N) - New York (N)'s leftfielder Kelly Johnson will miss at least 5 weeks after he got hurt seriously while running hard toward second base. He began limping and then fell down, causing a scary moment for his teammates. He had to be carried off the field. Torn Calf Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. Johnson has hit for a .325 average this season. He has 39 extra base hits along with 162 total bases, resulting in a .561 slugging percentage. OAKLAND - Oakland's shortstop Freddy Sanchez suffered a serious injury when he was struck by a pitch from New York (A)'s Roy Oswalt. He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. Sanchez will probaby miss 6 weeks. After being examined by several specialists the diagnosis is clear: Fractured Hand. His season numbers are: .215 AVG, 53 hits, 13 doubles, no triples and 5 bombs, along with 23 RBI and 23 runs scored.
Friday 6/24/2009: Pittsburgh's Richie Sexson has great day with five hits
MILWAUKEE - 'Wow, five hits in one game is something special, isn't it?' said Pittsburgh's leftfielder Richie Sexson after the 10-3 win over Milwaukee. A 359 foot drive to left field marked his 4th hit, a solo homerun off Ross Ohlendorf in the 6th inning. His 5th hit, a solo homerun off Ron Mahay in the 9th inning, landed an estimated 419 feet from home plate. He collected singles in the 1st , in the 3rd inning and in the 5th inning .
