Wednesday 9/7/2009: Russell Branyan ropes 500th career homerun
DETROIT - Detroit's rightfielder Russell Branyan already had some highlights in his career, and today he added a historic one, unloading for his 500th career homerun. Perhaps his best year so far was 2000 where he hit .296 with 65 homeruns and 145 RBI. Russell has managed to hit 30+ homeruns in a season 12 times, and he topped 40 homeruns 6 times. 'I still remember my first hit. But the one today is something special. I'll definitely keep that ball!' His monumental drive, a solo homerun off Darren Oliver in the 5th inning, cleared the fence in center field. It's no secret that he will one day be in the Hall of Fame!
Tuesday 9/6/2009: Chien-Ming Wang pitches 2-hit shutout against Cincinnati
FLORIDA - Florida's right-hander Chien-Ming Wang is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Cincinnati found out the hard way, getting just 2 hits. Wang 2nd shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 6th shutouts in his career. Wang (16-9) struck out 7 and walked 4, throwing 71 of 116 pitches for strikes. 'Hey, that's my job! Everytime I take the mound I give the best I can. And my best stuff was too much for them today.' Florida's third baseman Robinson Cano went 1 for 4, hitting a double, with 2 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Wang. Florida improved its record to 77-62, scoring 3 runs on 5 hits.
Monday 9/5/2009: Player of the Week honors go to Lee and Weeks
The American League's best player of the week was Baltimore's Derrek Lee, who wins the award for the 3rd time in his career. Derrek was on fire, hitting .458 with 4 HR and 12 RBI. He has hit 36 longballs while batting .243 this season. His 111 hits and 44 walks add up to a .314 on-base percentage. It's the 1st time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to Los Angeles (N)'s shortstop Rickie Weeks. Rickie was on fire, hitting .480 with 3 HR and 7 RBI. While compiling an on base percentage of .349, Rickie hit .231 and slugged .423. He has collected 82 runs batted in this year.
Saturday 9/3/2009: It's NO-NO time for Carlos Villanueva against Houston
ST. LOUIS - St. Louis' right-hander Carlos Villanueva made some history today, firing a no-hitter against Houston. Their hitters found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, never having a chance against his overpowering stuff. Villanueva (15-10) struck out 4 and walked none, throwing 59 of 96 pitches for strikes. 'Today I just felt great. I had a good feeling while warming up, and I knew something special was about to happen.' The hitting star for St. Louis was catcher Brian Schneider, he went 1 for 4, homering once. St. Louis scored 6 runs on 9 hits.
Saturday 9/3/2009: Carl Crawford collects five hits against Tampa Bay
BALTIMORE - Carl Crawford is among the best pure hitters in the game, but his 5 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself. A pitch from Tony J. Armas in the 1st inning left his bat for a double. Number 3 in the 3rd inning accounted for a two-run double. His 4th hit, a solo homerun off Victor Santos in the 6th inning, landed an estimated 384 feet from home plate. He had singles in the 3rd inning (one RBI) and in the 7th (one RBI). Carl did drive in 5 while scoring 4 runs on his own. He is hitting .299 this season, with 11 HR and 68 RBI. Baltimore improved its record to 82-55, scoring 20 runs on 21 hits.
Saturday 9/3/2009: Kansas City has no chance in a 2-hitter by Carlos Zambrano
KANSAS CITY - Boston's right-hander Carlos Zambrano is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Kansas City on just 2 hits. It's his 5th shutout this season, and the 21st time he has done it in his career. 'Things like that happen. You take the mound and everything works. My velocity was pretty good today and I guess it showed.' Zambrano (20-4) fanned 9 and walked none, throwing 125 pitches. Milton Bradley provided Boston with the offense Zambrano needed as he finished with 2 hits in 4 AB, homering once, and collecting 4 RBI. Boston scored 8 runs on 13 hits.
Friday 9/2/2009: Paul Konerko pounds three dingers
TORONTO - Hitting homeruns is one of the most difficult things in sports. To hit three of them in one game is almost sensational. Toronto's first baseman Paul Konerko accomplished that feat in a 6-1 win over Detroit. A 446 foot drive to center field marked his 1st bomb, a solo homerun off Joe Beimel in the 2nd inning. His 2nd shot, a two-run homerun off Joe Beimel in the 4th inning, cleared the fence in left field. In the 8th inning he unloaded a three-run homerun off Kevin Walker. Paul collected 3 hits in 4 trips to the plate, scoring three runs and collecting 6 RBI. His homerun total this year is 35, along with 111 RBI. The induction into the Hall of Fame is almost a sure thing for him now! The final score of the game was 6-1.
