Monday 5/23/2010: Player of the Week honors go to Howard and Carpenter
Seattle's first baseman Ryan Howard had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. He hit .450 with 10 RBI and slugged 1.350 in 20 at bats. His season features a batting average of .213 (32 hits in 150 AB), 7 doubles, no triples and 11 taters. Howard collected 26 RBI and 26 runs as well. The National League's best player of the week was Cincinnati's Chris Carpenter, who wins the award for the 2nd time in his career. He was in a zone all week, compiling an ERA of 1.06 while going 2-0. He hurled a shutout as well.
Saturday 5/21/2010: Toronto has no chance in a NO-HITTER by Justin Verlander
TORONTO - Detroit's right-hander Justin Verlander is a really great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff while making history, blanking Toronto on no hits. 'Well, the ball went where I wanted it. I was able to hit the corners with all of my pitches. I'm so happy that it was enough to pitch such a great game.' Verlander (8-0) struck out 9 and issued 2 BB, throwing 80 of 130 pitches for strikes. Luis Castillo provided Detroit with the offense Verlander needed as he stroked 1 hit in 4 AB. Detroit improved its record to 30-15, scoring 2 runs on 5 hits.
Friday 5/20/2010: Ryan Howard punishes Cleveland with three dingers
SEATTLE - Hitting a homerun is fine, but hitting three of them in one game is something special. Seattle's first baseman Ryan Howard accomplished that feat in a 7-4 win over Cleveland. His 1st blast, a two-run homerun off Brian Slocum in the 1st inning, landed an estimated 369 feet from home plate. A 358 foot drive to left field marked his 2nd bomb, a solo homerun off Brian Slocum in the 3rd inning. His 3rd shot, a solo homerun off Justin Duchscherer in the 5th inning, cleared the fence in right-center. Overall he finished 4 for 4, scoring three runs with 4 RBI. On 5/19/2010, Ryan Howard was the last player to hit 3 dingers in a single game.
Friday 5/20/2010: Russell Branyan ropes 2000th career hit
TORONTO - Detroit's Russell Branyan showed a smile on his face after he got his 2000th career hit against Toronto on Friday. With two outs in the 8th inning, Russell drilled a two run homerun, causing a standing ovation from the crowd. His best year so far was 2009 where he hit .300 with 57 homeruns and 151 RBI. 'I still remember my first hit. But the one today is something special. I'll definitely keep that ball!'

LOS ANGELES (A) - Seattle beat Los Angeles (A) 10-1, but that was not the real story of the game. Ryan Howard was, as he went deep three times. A pitch from Ricky Nolasco in the 1st inning left his bat for a solo homerun, landing 354 feet from home plate in right field. Number 2 in the 3rd inning, a shot estimated at 359 feet, cleared the wall in left field. In the 9th inning he unloaded a two-run homerun off Alex Herrera. Overall he collected 3 hits in 5 trips to the plate, scoring three times and collecting 4 RBI.
