Wednesday 6/1/2010: San Diego has no chance in a 2-hitter by Matt Cain
SAN FRANCISCO - It was a great day for San Francisco's right-hander Matt Cain. The 25-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 2-hitter, against San Diego on Wednesday. Cain (3-3) struck out 7 and issued 2 BB, throwing 57 of 100 pitches for strikes. 'I was hitting my spots. Now I'll start concentrating on my next start, and hopefully it will work again.' The hitting star for San Francisco was leftfielder Justin Upton, he finished 2 for 4, homering once, scoring two runs and driving in 4 runs. The final score of the game was 7-0.
Wednesday 6/1/2010: Alvarez (BOS) and Harden (ATL) win monthly pitcher award
It's the 1st time that the American League Pitcher of the Month award goes to Boston's pitcher Victor Alvarez. His ERA of just 0.97 helped him to a 5-0 record in May. He worked 46.1 innings, striking out 50 hitters while walking 6. Victor has a record of 8-1 this season, with an ERA of 1.42. In 88.2 Innings he was able to strike out 100 batters. Victor has pitched one shutout and one complete game. He's 2nd in the American League in ERA and 3rd in wins! Rich Harden pitched like a legend in May, and the National League named him Pitcher of the Month for his extraordinary performance. He went 6-0 in May and finished the month with an ERA of 0.59. He struck out 66 in 61 innings. Rich got two complete game shutouts as well! This season Harden compiled an ERA of 0.65, going 11-0 in 13 starts. Wednesday 6/1/2010: Batter of the Month award winners announced
The Batter of the Month award in the American League goes to Seattle's Adrian Beltre this time, as the third baseman displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Adrian was on fire, hitting .333 with 12 homeruns and 30 RBI. Beltre has hit 17 longballs this year while batting .339. He adds 14 doubles, along with 48 runs scored. He's 5th in the American League in batting, 3rd in homeruns and 2nd in RBI! The Batter of the Month award in the National League goes to Los Angeles (N)'s David Ortiz this time, as the first baseman displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. He had an on base percentage of .396 and hit .340, while driving in 29 runs. His season numbers are: .259 AVG, 51 hits, 11 doubles, one triple and 11 longballs, along with 38 RBI and 23 runs scored. He's 7th in the National League in RBIs and 4th in homeruns!
Monday 5/30/2010: Chris R. Young shuts out Milwaukee on one hit
MILWAUKEE - Great days are rare. But not for Philadelphia's right-hander Chris R. Young. Milwaukee found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just one hit. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 10th time he has done it in his career. Miguel Olivo spoiled the bid for a no-hitter when he singled with one out in the 6th inning. Young (8-3) showed excellent control, walking nobody and fanning 6. 'Wow, what a nice day. I guess I had a good breakfast today.' Philadelphia's leftfielder Matt Kemp finished 2 for 5, with 4 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Young. The final score of the game was 10-0.
Monday 5/30/2010: Edgar Renteria ropes 2000th career hit
ATLANTA - Atlanta's players had every reason to congratulate Edgar Renteria, who reached a milestone today, collecting his 2000th career hit! His best year so far was 2001 where he hit .313 with 14 homeruns and 66 RBI. 'Good things happen when you put the bat on the ball.' He hit a single in the 8th off Joaquin Benoit for number 2000.
Monday 5/30/2010: New York (N)'s Johnson wins Player of the Week award
It's the 10th time that the American League Player of the Week award goes to Seattle's shortstop Mike B. Young. Young helped his team with an average of .577 and 6 RBI in 26 at bats. New York (N)'s second baseman Kelly Johnson had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. In 24 at bats he hit .500 with 2 HR and 11 RBI.

PHILADELPHIA - Arizona's players had every reason to congratulate Scott Podsednik, who reached a milestone today, collecting his 2000th career hit! His hit in the 4th inning was a double off Ben Sheets. His best year so far was 2009 where he hit .329 with 25 homeruns and 82 RBI. 'Good things happen when you put the bat on the ball.'
Wednesday 5/25/2010: Adrian Beltre on fire, crushes three
SEATTLE - Seattle beat Kansas City 24-1, but that was not the real story of the game. Adrian Beltre was, as he went deep three times. A 366 foot drive to left field marked his 1st bomb, a solo homerun off Jose Rosado in the 3rd inning. Number 2 in the 7th inning, a shot estimated at 340 feet, cleared the wall in left field. A pitch from Francisco Cordova in the 8th inning left his bat for a three-run homerun, landing 419 feet from home plate in center field. Overall he finished with 4 hits in 6 AB, scoring FOUR times with 6 RBI. So far this season he is batting .342 with 17 homers and 50 RBI.
Wednesday 5/25/2010: Jake Peavy out for full season
BOSTON - Boston's right-hander Jake Peavy experienced probably the worst case scenario for a pitcher, a season ending injury. After pitching in the 5th inning of the game against Toronto, Peavy complained about serious pain in his throwing arm. He had to leave the game. Peavy was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Ruptured Disc Back. Jake has a record of 5-2 this season, with an ERA of 2.89. In 81 Innings he was able to strike out 73 batters. Jake has pitched one shutout and 2 complete games.
