Tuesday 5/2/2011: Zack Greinke shuts out Milwaukee on 2 hits
COLORADO - Zack Greinke had his best stuff going, and Milwaukee hitters were chanceless. Colorado's right-hander fired a 2-hitter, his 1st shutout of the season. 'I felt early that I was on top of my game. Fortunately I was able to keep that feeling the entire game.' Greinke (1-2) struck out an astounding 13 and walked none, throwing 81 of 117 pitches for strikes. Brian Schneider helped Greinke at the plate, he finished 2 for 4. Colorado scored 4 runs on 9 hits.
Tuesday 5/2/2011: Chris R. Young shuts out Miami on 2 hits
MIAMI - Philadelphia's right-hander Chris R. Young is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Miami on just 2 hits. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 13th time he has done it in his career. Young (3-2) fanned 8 and walked 1, throwing 94 pitches. 'I hit the corners with all of my pitches. That helped a lot!' Philadelphia's third baseman Endy Chavez collected 1 hit in 3 trips to the plate, hitting a homerun, and driving in 2 runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Young. Philadelphia improved its record to 18-9, scoring 3 runs on 5 hits.
Tuesday 5/2/2011: Pittsburgh's Trumbo wins Player of the Week award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Dustin Pedroia, Boston's starting second baseman. He had an on base percentage of .571 and hit .538, while driving in 6 runs. Dustin has gone 35 for 109 (.321) this season, hitting one tater and driving in 13 runs. He has scored 23 runs on his own. Pittsburgh's first baseman Mark Trumbo had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. Mark went 12 for 23 (.522), while hitting 3 HR and collecting 12 RBI. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 7 games. Trumbo has walked 2 times this year and posts a .308 OBP. While batting .284, 27 for 95, he has driven in 23 runs.
Monday 5/1/2011: New York (N)'s Cornejo named Pitcher of the Month
The best month of April in the American League certainly had Boston's right-hander Carlos Zambrano, earning him the Pitcher of the Month award. He went 4-1 in April and finished the month with an ERA of 0.85. He struck out 50 in 42.1 innings. Carlos pitched a shutout as well. Nate Cornejo couldn't have pitched much better than he did in April, and the National League thought so as well, naming the right-hander Pitcher of the Month. His record of 5-1 in 6 was among the leagues best this month. In 52.2 innings of work he allowed just 32 hits while striking out 40, compiling an ERA of just 0.68. Nate pitched THREE complete game shutouts!
Monday 5/1/2011: San Diego's McCutchen named Batter of the Month
Nelson R. Cruz of Oakland wins his 1st Batter of the Month award for putting up the best numbers in the American League. He hit .310 with 33 RBI and slugged .790 in 100 at bats. The Batter of the Month award in the National League goes to San Diego's Andrew McCutchen this time, as the centerfielder displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Andrew went 39 for 95 (.411), while hitting 9 HR and collecting 18 RBI.
Sunday 4/30/2011: Edwin Jackson throws PERFECT GAME against New York (A)
NEW YORK (A) - Cleveland's right-hander Edwin Jackson is a really great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff while making history, blanking New York (A) on no hits. The crowd of 45460 gave him a standing ovation when teammates carried him off the field on their shoulders. 'I felt early that I was on top of my game. Fortunately I was able to keep that feeling the entire game.' Jackson (3-0) struck out 8 and walked none, throwing 59 of 96 pitches for strikes. Hanley Ramirez provided Cleveland with the offense Jackson needed as he finished 3 for 3, hitting a homerun, stroking a double, scoring two runs with 3 RBI. The final score of the game was 12-0.
Tuesday 4/25/2011: Edwin Encarnacion (BAL) will miss 8 weeks
BALTIMORE - Baltimore's shortstop Edwin Encarnacion suffered a serious injury when he was struck by a pitch from Minnesota's Colby Lewis. He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. Encarnacion will probaby miss 8 weeks. Encarnacion was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Fractured Cheekbone. His season features a batting average of .222 (18 hits in 81 AB), 2 doubles, no triples and 3 homeruns. Encarnacion collected 6 RBI and 9 runs as well.
