Wednesday 5/24/2011: Joel Pineiro quiets Minnesota bats with shutout
DETROIT - Detroit's right-hander Joel Pineiro is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Minnesota on just one hit. It's his 2nd shutout this season, and the 8th time he has done it in his career. Pineiro (7-2) was overpowering, fanning 11 while walking none, throwing 114 pitches. 'Giving my team a chance to win is the most important thing for me. I was able to do it today.' Yasmani Grandal provided Detroit with the offense Pineiro needed as he collected 2 hits in 5 trips to the plate, homering once, with 4 RBI. The final score of the game was 7-0.
Tuesday 5/23/2011: Stanton (NYA) and James (CHN) win P.O.W. award
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Giancarlo Stanton, New York (A)'s starting rightfielder. In 24 at bats he hit .542 with 3 HR and 5 RBI. Stanton has hit 10 bombs this year while batting .299. He adds 7 doubles, along with 24 runs scored. Monday 5/22/2011: Cory Wade fires 2-hitter against Milwaukee
MILWAUKEE - Pittsburgh's right-hander Cory Wade is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Milwaukee found out the hard way, getting just 2 hits. Wade 2nd shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 7th shutouts in his career. 'Well, the ball went where I wanted it. I was able to hit the corners with all of my pitches.' Wade (5-3) was overpowering, fanning 10 while walking 1, throwing 113 pitches. The hitting star for Pittsburgh was shortstop Shin-Soo Choo, he collected 1 hit in 4 trips to the plate, hitting a homerun. Pittsburgh improved its record to 24-20, scoring 4 runs on 6 hits.
Monday 5/22/2011: Scott T. Baker blanks Oakland with a 2-hitter
CHICAGO (A) - Chicago (A)'s right-hander Scott T. Baker is clearly one of the best pitchers in the game. Oakland found out the hard way, getting just 2 hits. Baker 1st shutout this season was a masterpiece, as he was almost untouchable. He has now hurled 6th shutouts in his career. 'I didn't feel that I had good stuff while warming up. But it got better the more I threw the ball. I guess I was lucky.' Baker (5-3) fanned 4 and walked 1, throwing 82 pitches. The hitting star for Chicago (A) was third baseman Andy Phillips, he got 2 hits in 4 AB, stroking a double. The final score of the game was 4-0.

CHICAGO (A) - John Danks took the mound and never left. And Chicago (A) hitters couldn't touch him at all. Oakland's lefty gave up just one hit in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 3 career shutouts in 116 games started. With two outs in the 7th inning Starling Marte singled to break up the no-hitter. 'Well, the ball went where I wanted it. I was able to hit the corners with all of my pitches.' Danks (7-1) fanned 4 and walked none, throwing 109 pitches. Wilton Guerrero provided Oakland with the offense Danks needed as he finished with 1 hit in 4 AB. Oakland improved its record to 21-22, scoring 2 runs on 5 hits.
Saturday 5/20/2011: Oakland's Politte severely injured
OAKLAND - Oakland's right-hander Cliff Politte experienced probably the worst case scenario for a pitcher, a season ending injury. After pitching in the 7th inning of the game against Chicago (A), Politte complained about serious pain in his throwing arm. He had to leave the game. After being taken to a local hospital, Politte was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Ruptured Disc Back. In 0 starts this year Cliff struck out 31 batters in 26.2 innings of work. His ERA is 2.70, his record 2-1.
Saturday 5/20/2011: Alex Gordon out for full season
TORONTO - Toronto's leftfielder Alex Gordon suffered a season ending injury when he hurt himself diving for a ball. He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Torn Rib Cage Muscle. Surgery will be performed next week. Alex has gone 39 for 139 (.281) this season, hitting 8 longballs and driving in 35 runs. He has scored 35 runs on his own.
Thursday 5/18/2011: San Diego has no chance in a 2-hitter by Ben Sheets
SAN DIEGO - Great days are rare. But not for Philadelphia's right-hander Ben Sheets. San Diego found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 3rd shutout this season, and the 28th time he has done it in his career. Sheets (7-1) fanned 7 and walked none, throwing 100 pitches. 'I'll have to give a lot of credit to my catcher. He put all the right fingers down today.' Curtis Granderson helped Sheets at the plate, he finished with 3 hits in 3 AB, hitting a homerun, scoring three runs and driving in 3 runs. The final score of the game was 17-0.

PITTSBURGH - Chase Headley hits 'em where they ain't. Pittsburgh certainly agrees as New York (N)'s leftfielder unloaded four hits and hitting for the cycle. Number 1 in the 2nd inning accounted for a RBI double. A single in the 4th off Bronson Arroyo accounted for his 2nd hit. Hit number 3 followed in the 6th inning, a RBI triple. In the 7th inning he unloaded a two-run homerun off Matt Capps. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Chase did drive in 4 while scoring 2 runs on his own. He is hitting .267 this season, with 3 HR and 12 RBI. He's now the 134th player in league history to hit for the cycle! On 8/14/2010, Lyle Overbay was the last player to hit for the cycle.

CHICAGO (N) - St. Louis' players had every reason to congratulate Matt Holliday, who reached a milestone today, collecting his 2000th career hit! His best year so far was 2010 where he hit .348 with 44 homeruns and 127 RBI. 'Baseball is a great game, and adding something to it's history is smething I've always wanted. What a great day!' His hit in the 9th inning was a double off Jake McGee.

NEW YORK (A) - On Wednesday, Toronto's shortstop Jack Wilson displayed his sensational ability to handle the bat against New York (A), punishing their pitchers with six hits. He had singles in the 1st inning , in the 2nd inning , in the 4th , in the 6th , in the 8th inning and in the 8th (two RBIs). Jack did drive in 4 while scoring 4 runs on his own.
