Thursday 10/27/1969: Grant and Gibson receive Cy Young Award
Mudcat Grant was named the American League Cy Young Award winner today. California's right-hander put up fabulous numbers this year which earned him the highest award a pitcher can receive. His ERA of 2.29 helped him to a 24-8 record this year. He struck out 263 and walked 95 in 310.2 innings. Mudcat has pitched 7 shutouts and 18 complete games. He's 4th in the American League in ERA and 1st in wins! Grant wins the award for the 2nd time in his 11-year career. Bob Gibson will never forget this year. His dominating season convinced the National League to name St. Louis' right-hander the Cy Young Award winner of 1969. Opposing players hit .191 against Bob this season. While posting an ERA of 1.63 he went 30-7 in 38 starts, fanning 293 and walking 36 hitters. He has 26 complete games and 8 shutouts. He's 1st in the National League in ERA and 1st in wins! Gibson wins the award for the 2nd time in his 10-year career.
Thursday 10/27/1969: Rose Sr. (DET) and Clemente (LAN) win Most Valuable Player Award
The 1969 American League Most Valuable Player Award winner has been announced. It's Detroit's shortstop Pete Rose Sr. who really had a great offensive year. Rose Sr. has walked 75 times this year and posts a .441 OBP. While batting .366, 224 for 612, he has driven in 90 runs. He's 1st in the American League in batting! It was a day to remember for Los Angeles (N)'s Roberto Clemente, who won the National League Most Valuable Player Award today. It put the finishing touches on what has been a tremendous season for the slugger. Roberto has gone 187 for 595 (.314) this season, hitting 44 taters and driving in 123 runs. He has scored 110 runs on his own. He's 5th in the National League in batting, 1st in homeruns and 1st in RBI! Clemente wins the award for the 4th time in his 14-year career.

Detroit's centerfielder Jackie Warner has worked hard to reach the big leagues. His work paid off today as the American League named him the Rookie of the Year Award winner! He has hit 28 homeruns while batting .306 this season. His 165 hits and 61 walks add up to a .376 on-base percentage. He's 6th in the American League in batting, 5th in homeruns and 7th in RBI! The 1969 National League Rookie of the Year Award winner is from Los Angeles (N) this season. Jack Dilauro put together impressive numbers for a rookie en route to win the first major award of his career. Let's hope more will follow for this 26 year old ballplayer. Opposing players hit .218 against Jack this season. While posting an ERA of 2.52 he went 17-9 in 35 starts, fanning 111 and walking 57 hitters. Jack has pitched 3 shutouts and 15 complete games.
