Wednesday 6/1/1976: Ron Guidry fires 1-hitter against San Diego
MONTREAL - Ron Guidry had his best stuff going, and San Diego hitters were chanceless. Montreal's lefty fired a 1-hitter, his 1st shutout of the season. Guidry (2-4) fanned 7 and walked 1, throwing 91 pitches. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' Fred Lynn provided Montreal with the offense Guidry needed as he stroked 1 hit in 2 AB, hitting a homerun, and driving in 3 runs. Montreal scored 8 runs on 10 hits.
Wednesday 6/1/1976: Pitcher of the Month award winners announced
Cecil Upshaw couldn't have pitched much better than he did in May, and the American League thought so as well, naming the right-hander Pitcher of the Month. He went 4-1 in May and finished the month with an ERA of 0.24. He struck out 6 in 37.1 innings. Cecil fired THREE shutouts! His ERA of 1.59 helped him to a 7-2 record this year. He struck out 15 and walked 15 in 79.1 innings. Cecil has pitched 3 shutouts and 7 complete games. He's 1st in the American League in ERA and 5th in wins! Winner of this months National League Pitcher of the Month award is Houston's Don Gullett. He had an ERA of just 1.36 in 39.2 innings of work in which he struck out 19 hitters. His record in May is 4-1. Don also fired a shutout. Don has a record of 7-3 this season, with an ERA of 2.30. In 82 Innings he was able to strike out 36 batters. Don has pitched one shutout and 2 complete games. He's 7th in the National League in ERA and 8th in wins!
Wednesday 6/1/1976: Batter of the Month award winners announced
The American League's best player of the month was California's Bobby Bonds, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. Bobby was on fire, hitting .293 with 13 homeruns and 38 RBI. Bonds has hit 17 bombs this year while batting .263. He adds 5 doubles, along with 39 runs scored. He's 1st in the American League in RBIs and 2nd in homeruns! Gene Tenace of Pittsburgh wins his 2nd Batter of the Month award for putting up the best numbers in the National League. Tenace helped his team with an average of .387 and 19 RBI in 80 at bats. This year Tenace drove in 26 and scored 27 runs while batting .314 with 12 taters. He's 7th in the National League in batting!
Monday 5/30/1976: Johnson (DET) and May (PIT) win P.O.W. award
Davey Johnson from Detroit wins his 4th Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the American League. Davey pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .464 with 4 HR and 14 RBI while slugging .893. He now has homered in 3 consecutive games as well! His season features a batting average of .341 (61 hits in 179 AB), 7 doubles, no triples and 13 taters. Johnson collected 42 RBI and 36 runs as well. He's 5th in the American League in batting, 5th in homeruns and 5th in RBI! Pittsburgh's first baseman Lee May had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. He had an on base percentage of .452 and hit .393, while driving in 8 runs. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 7 game hitting streak right now.
Saturday 5/28/1976: Tony Horton parks three against Cleveland
CALIFORNIA - Tony Horton was in a groove, and the results spoke for themselves. He powered California to a 8-0 win over Cleveland by homering three times. Number 1 in the 2nd inning, a shot estimated at 387 feet, cleared the wall in left field. In the 5th inning he unloaded a solo homerun off Mike Flanagan. His 3rd shot, off Mike Flanagan in the 6th inning, was a two-run homerun and cleared the fence in center field. Overall he collected 3 hits in 3 trips to the plate, scoring three runs and collecting 5 RBI. In 5530 career at bats, he has hit 162 homeruns and collected 757 RBI.
Saturday 5/28/1976: Tom Hall turns in great performance against Cleveland
CALIFORNIA - Tom Hall had some fun again. Cleveland hitters did not. California's left-hander gave up just 2 hits in his 2nd shutout of the season. He now has 29 career shutouts in 257 games started. Dave Marshall spoiled the bid for a no-hitter when he doubled with one out in the 6th inning. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' Hall (9-3) struck out 8 and walked 1, throwing 77 of 132 pitches for strikes. The hitting star for California was third baseman Tony Horton, he stroked 3 hits in 3 AB, going deep three times, scoring three runs with 5 RBI. California improved its record to 31-18, scoring 8 runs on 8 hits.
