CALIFORNIA - California's right-hander Nolan Ryan suffered a severe injury on Saturday and will be out for at least 4-5 weeks. In the 1st of the game against Minnesota he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Strained Bicep Muscle was the diagnosis after x-rays were taken in a nearby hospital. The message shocked teammates and team officials. Opposing players hit .200 against Nolan this season. While posting an ERA of 2.56 he went 20-13 in 38 starts, fanning 228 and walking 57 hitters. Nolan has pitched 3 shutouts and 14 complete games. He's 5th in the American League in ERA and 3rd in wins!
Saturday 10/1/1981: Milwaukee's Strohmayer out for 5 weeks
MILWAUKEE - Milwaukee's right-hander John Strohmayer suffered a severe injury on Saturday and will be out for at least 5 weeks. In the 6th of the game against Toronto he experienced pain in his throwing arm and had to leave the game. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Torn Bicep Muscle which will require surgery. His ERA of 4.34 helped him to a 10-10 record this year. He struck out 62 and walked 28 in 170 innings. John has pitched one shutout and 5 complete games.

Nolan Ryan pitched like a legend in September, and the American League named him Pitcher of the Month for his extraordinary performance. He struck out 56 hitters in his 7 starts, putting together a record of 7-0 while pitching 56 innings. His ERA in September was 1.26. Nolan pitched a shutout as well. Opposing players hit .199 against Nolan this season. While posting an ERA of 2.51 he went 20-13 in 37 starts, fanning 228 and walking 57 hitters. Nolan has pitched 3 shutouts and 14 complete games. George Brett of Kansas City wins his 4th Batter of the Month award for putting up the best numbers in the American League. George was on fire, hitting .379 with 9 homeruns and 22 RBI. His season numbers are: .299 AVG, 164 hits, 36 doubles, 4 triples and 27 taters, along with 93 RBI and 89 runs scored. Jeff Burroughs of St. Louis wins his 1st Batter of the Month award for putting up the best numbers in the National League. In 95 at bats he hit .442 with 3 HR and 16 RBI. Jeff has gone 190 for 556 (.342) this season, hitting 25 longballs and driving in 95 runs. He has scored 90 runs on his own. He's 1st in the National League in batting, 9th in homeruns and 10th in RBI!
Friday 9/30/1981: Jon Matlack quiets St. Louis bats with shutout
ST. LOUIS - Atlanta's lefty Jon Matlack is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking St. Louis on just 2 hits. It's his 4th shutout this season, and the 10th time he has done it in his career. Matlack (19-8) fanned 6 and walked 1, throwing 99 pitches. 'I felt early that I was on top of my game. Fortunately I was able to keep that feeling the entire game.' Atlanta's centerfielder Dale Murphy finished with 2 hits in 4 AB, and driving in 2 runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Matlack. The final score of the game was 4-0.
Friday 9/30/1981: Rick Dempsey (BAL) will miss 5-6 weeks
BALTIMORE - Baltimore's season took a blow when Rick Dempsey suffered a serious injury in the game against Milwaukee. He was hurt when ge got bowled over in a scary collision at home plate. Dempsey will probaby miss 5-6 weeks. After being taken to a local hospital, Dempsey was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Broken Ribs. Dempsey has hit one longball this year while batting .258. He adds 22 doubles, along with 63 runs scored.
Wednesday 9/28/1981: It's NO-NO time for Harry Parker against Chicago (N)
CHICAGO (N) - St. Louis' right-hander Harry Parker is a really great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff while making history, blanking Chicago (N) on no hits. Cecil Cooper spoiled the bid for a perfect game when he walked with no outs in the 8th inning. 'I hit the corners with all of my pitches. That helped a lot!' Parker (16-6) fanned 3 and walked 1, throwing 97 pitches. The hitting star for St. Louis was first baseman Bob Horner, he collected 2 hits in 4 trips to the plate, blasting a homerun, stroking a double, with 4 RBI. St. Louis scored 11 runs on 16 hits.
Monday 9/26/1981: Rance Mulliniks on fire, laces five hits
ST. LOUIS - St. Louis' shortstop Rance Mulliniks accomplished a difficult feat in a 14-1 win over Pittsburgh, drilling five hits to improve his career batting average to .266! His 3rd hit, a two-run homerun off Charlie Vaughan in the 2nd inning, landed an estimated 404 feet from home plate. A 367 foot drive to left field marked his 4th hit, a solo homerun off Charlie Vaughan in the 4th inning. A pitch from Bill Travers in the 6th inning left his bat for a double. He collected singles in the 1st inning and in the 1st (one RBI). Rance scored 5 runs, and he collected 4 RBI as well! He is hitting .290 this season, with 4 HR and 28 RBI. St. Louis improved its record to 100-58, scoring 14 runs on 18 hits.
Monday 9/26/1981: Sixto Lezcano out for full season
SAN DIEGO - San Diego's centerfielder Sixto Lezcano suffered a season ending injury when he hurt himself diving for a ball. He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Broken Foot which will require surgery. This year Lezcano drove in 47 and scored 37 runs while batting .289 with 5 homeruns.
Monday 9/26/1981: Kato and Leonard win Player of the Week award
California's first baseman Hideji Kato had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. He hit .458 with 13 RBI and slugged .917 in 24 at bats. He has hit 23 longballs while batting .250 this season. His 151 hits and 34 walks add up to a .287 on-base percentage. It's the 2nd time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to San Francisco's leftfielder Jeffrey Leonard. Leonard helped his team with an average of .500 and 15 RBI in 26 at bats. He got at least one hit each game this week and is on a 8 game hitting streak right now.

LOS ANGELES (N) - When it rains, it pours. Los Angeles (N)'s ace Don Hood will not pitch for at least 5 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against San Diego where he left the field in the 1st inning. Hood was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays.
