Monday 5/9/1988: Player of the Week honors go to Grace and Wilson
Mark Grace from Baltimore wins his 1st Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the American League. Mark went 9 for 20 (.450), while hitting 1 HR and collecting 10 RBI. Grace has walked 22 times this year and posts a .453 OBP. While batting .354, 40 for 113, he has driven in 27 runs. He's 6th in the American League in batting and 5th in RBI! Mookie Wilson wins his 2nd Player of the Week award. National League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Mookie was on fire, hitting .333 with 2 HR and 5 RBI. While compiling an on base percentage of .262, Mookie hit .227 and slugged .462. He has collected 21 runs batted in this year. He's 5th in the National League in RBIs and 5th in homeruns!
Saturday 5/7/1988: Scott Sanderson turns in great performance against Cincinnati
NEW YORK (N) - Great days are rare. But not for New York (N)'s right-hander Scott Sanderson. Cincinnati found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 14th time he has done it in his career. Sanderson (3-1) fanned 9 and walked 3, throwing 123 pitches. 'Pitching a great game is always a good thing. And it doesn't get much better than today.' The hitting star for New York (N) was third baseman Steve Balboni, he collected 1 hit in 4 trips to the plate, hitting a homerun, and driving in 2 runs. New York (N) improved its record to 20-13, scoring 5 runs on 11 hits.
Thursday 5/5/1988: Montreal's Wallach out for 9-10 weeks
MONTREAL - Montreal's season took a blow when Tim Wallach suffered a serious injury in the game against St. Louis. He hurt his arm throwing a strike to first base. Wallach will probaby miss 9-10 weeks. After being taken to a local hospital, Wallach was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Strained Elbow Ligament. Wallach has walked 9 times this year and posts a .308 OBP. While batting .243, 26 for 107, he has driven in 16 runs.
