CINCINNATI - St. Louis' southpaw Morris Madden is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Cincinnati on just 2 hits. It's his 1st shutout this season, and the 2nd time he has done it in his career. 'My catcher called a very good game. I have to give credit to him.' Madden (12-5) was overpowering, fanning 10 while walking none, throwing 102 pitches. The hitting star for St. Louis was shortstop Eric Davis, he finished 2 for 4, hitting a homerun, scoring two runs and collecting 3 RBI. St. Louis improved its record to 70-67, scoring 10 runs on 13 hits.
Monday 9/5/1991: Cleveland's Ripken wins Player of the Week award
Cal Ripken from Cleveland wins his 2nd Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the American League. He had an on base percentage of .552 and hit .500, while driving in 6 runs. The National League Player of the Week award goes to Greg Vaughn, Pittsburgh's starting leftfielder. Vaughn helped his team with an average of .500 and 12 RBI in 20 at bats. His season features a batting average of .234 (103 hits in 440 AB), 23 doubles, 7 triples and 22 longballs. Vaughn collected 80 RBI and 67 runs as well.
Sunday 9/4/1991: Don Robinson pitches 2-hit shutout against New York (N)
ATLANTA - Great days are rare. But not for Atlanta's right-hander Don Robinson. New York (N) found out the hard way that he is among the leagues top pitchers, getting just 2 hits. It's his 3rd shutout this season, and the 26th time he has done it in his career. Robinson (15-11) struck out 3 and issued 1 BB, throwing 60 of 101 pitches for strikes. 'Giving my team a chance to win is the most important thing for me. I was able to do it today.' The hitting star for Atlanta was third baseman Mark Brouhard, he got 1 hit in 4 AB, homering once, and driving in 3 runs. Atlanta scored 5 runs on 9 hits.
Thursday 9/1/1991: Jimmy Key fires 2-hitter against New York (A)
NEW YORK (A) - New York (A)'s bats were sleeping, and Cleveland's Jimmy Key gave them no chance to wake up. He gave up just 2 hits in recording his 1st shutout of the season. Key (6-8) fanned 7 and walked 1, throwing 107 pitches. 'That was one of the best games of my career. I had my stuff working very well today.' Cleveland's third baseman German Rivera stroked 4 hits in 4 AB, scoring twice and collecting 3 RBI. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Key. The final score of the game was 11-0.
