Saturday 10/1/1991: Russell and Dravecky receive Pitcher of the Month award
Winner of this months American League Pitcher of the Month award is Toronto's Jeff Russell. He went 7-0 in September and finished the month with an ERA of 0.91. He struck out 43 in 59.1 innings. Jeff has a record of 23-6 this season, with an ERA of 1.87. In 269.1 Innings he was able to strike out 195 batters. Jeff has pitched 3 shutouts and 5 complete games. He's 5th in the American League in ERA and 2nd in wins! Dave Dravecky pitched like a legend in September, and the National League named him Pitcher of the Month for his extraordinary performance. He started 6 games in September, going 4-0 and compiling an ERA of 0.43 in 41.2 innings. Dave fanned 31 hitters. In 32 starts this year Dave struck out 154 batters in 231.1 innings of work. The American League Batter of the Month award goes to Ron Gant, Toronto's starting second baseman. Gant helped his team with an average of .361 and 23 RBI in 108 at bats. Ron has gone 154 for 566 (.272) this season, hitting 29 homeruns and driving in 111 runs. He has scored 95 runs on his own. He's 4th in the American League in RBIs and 4th in homeruns! Pittsburgh's third baseman Tim Wallach had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Batter of the Month. Tim pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .353 with 6 and 27 RBI while slugging .694. Tim has gone 144 for 524 (.275) this season, hitting 25 bombs and driving in 100 runs. He has scored 82 runs on his own.
Thursday 9/29/1991: Kevin Brown pitches 1-hit shutout against Milwaukee
MILWAUKEE - Toronto's right-hander Kevin Brown is a great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff, blanking Milwaukee on just one hit. It's his 3rd shutout this season, and the 9th time he has done it in his career. With two outs in the 9th inning George A. Bell singled to break up the no-hitter. Brown (19-11) showed excellent control, walking nobody and fanning 9. 'I had my stuff going. Everything I tried worked. What a day!' Scott Fletcher provided Toronto with the offense Brown needed as he finished with 2 hits in 4 AB, homering once, hitting a double, scoring 2 runs. Toronto scored 5 runs on 11 hits.
Tuesday 9/27/1991: Kenny Rogers blanks Houston with a 1-hitter
HOUSTON - It was a great day for Philadelphia's southpaw Kenny Rogers. The 26-year old recorded his first career shutout, a 1-hitter, against Houston on Tuesday. Jeff Bagwell spoiled the bid for a no-hitter when he doubled with no outs in the 5th inning. Rogers (9-9) fanned 4 and walked none, throwing 92 pitches. 'I had my stuff going. Everything I tried worked. What a day!' Alan Trammell helped Rogers at the plate, he collected 2 hits in 4 trips to the plate, blasting a homerun, and collecting 3 RBI. Philadelphia scored 7 runs on 11 hits.
Tuesday 9/27/1991: Tony R. Armas collects 2000th hit against Toronto
TORONTO - Boston's centerfielder Tony R. Armas already had some highlights in his career, and today he added another one, getting his 2000th career hit. He hit a single in the 2nd off Dave Stewart for number 2000. His best year so far was 1987 where he hit .287 with 23 homeruns and 76 RBI. 'Baseball is a great game, and adding something to it's history is smething I've always wanted. What a great day!'
Monday 9/26/1991: Philadelphia's King wins Player of the Week award
The Player of the Week award in the American League goes to Seattle's Pete M. O'Brien this time, as the first baseman displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. He hit .478 with 8 RBI and slugged .739 in 23 at bats. The National League Player of the Week award goes to Jeff King, Philadelphia's starting first baseman. He hit .542 with 12 RBI and slugged 1.083 in 24 at bats. Jeff managed to drive in at least one run in every game he played this week. This year King drove in 87 and scored 83 runs while batting .220 with 21 taters.
