Saturday 11/5/1995: Minnesota's Garrelts earns Cy Young Award
Awards may not be the most important thing for Scott Garrelts, but Minnesota's right-hander smiled as he was named the American League Cy Young Award winner. Scott has a record of 25-8 this season, with an ERA of 1.79. In 271.2 Innings he was able to strike out 151 batters. He has 14 complete games and 6 shutouts. He's 1st in the American League in ERA and 1st in wins! Garrelts wins the award for the 2nd time in his 11-year career.
Greg Maddux will never forget this year. His dominating season convinced the National League to name Atlanta's right-hander the Cy Young Award winner of 1995. Greg has a record of 25-3 this season, with an ERA of 1.72. In 272.2 Innings he was able to strike out 194 batters. Greg has pitched 6 shutouts and 11 complete games. The 1995 American League Most Valuable Player Award winner has been announced. It's Detroit's third baseman Robin Ventura who really had a great offensive year. Ventura has hit for a .343 average this season. He has 57 extra base hits along with 314 total bases, resulting in a .556 slugging percentage. He's 1st in the American League in batting and 2nd in RBI!
The 1995 National League Most Valuable Player Award winner has been announced as well. It's St. Louis' third baseman Felix Jose who really had a great offensive year. Tuesday 11/1/1995: Mike Jeffcoat (CAL) will miss 5 weeks
CALIFORNIA - California is without its left-hander Mike Jeffcoat for at least 5 weeks. He injured himself while throwing a pitch to Rob Deer in a game against San Francisco. His face showed signs of pain immediately after the ball left his hand. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Pulled Tricep Muscle. Surgery will be performed next week. This season Jeffcoat compiled an ERA of 2.87, going 16-11 in 34 starts. He fanned 147 while giving up 188 hits in 250.2 innings. He has 11 complete games and 4 shutouts.
