Monday 10/3/1997: Justice and Clark win Player of the Week award
The American League's best player of the week was California's David Justice, who wins the award for the 7th time in his career. David pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .500 with 4 HR and 10 RBI while slugging 1.278. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to San Francisco's Will Clark this time, as the first baseman displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Will went 10 for 17 (.588), while hitting 2 HR and collecting 6 RBI.
Saturday 10/1/1997: Brown (TOR) and Smoltz (TOR) win monthly pitcher award
Kevin Brown pitched like a legend in September, and the American League named him Pitcher of the Month for his extraordinary performance. His ERA of just 0.82 helped him to a 6-0 record in September. He worked 55 innings, striking out 36 hitters while walking 10. Kevin got two complete game shutouts as well! His ERA of 2.29 helped him to a 18-7 record this year. He struck out 155 and walked 47 in 252 innings. Kevin has pitched 3 shutouts and 4 complete games. John Smoltz couldn't have pitched much better than he did in September, and the American League thought so as well, naming the right-hander Pitcher of the Month. He started 6 games in September, going 6-0 and compiling an ERA of 1.20 in 52.1 innings. John fanned 51 hitters. John got two complete game shutouts as well! California's shortstop Chipper Jones had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Batter of the Month. He had an on base percentage of .439 and hit .375, while driving in 25 runs. Chipper has gone 193 for 607 (.318) this season, hitting 42 bombs and driving in 113 runs. He has scored 139 runs on his own. It's the 4th time that the National League Batter of the Month award goes to San Francisco's first baseman Will Clark. He had an on base percentage of .473 and hit .389, while driving in 15 runs. Clark has hit for a .315 average this season. He has 64 extra base hits along with 310 total bases, resulting in a .530 slugging percentage. He's 9th in the National League in batting!
Tuesday 9/27/1997: Garret Anderson uncorks six hits against Seattle
KANSAS CITY - Garret Anderson is among the best pure hitters in the game, but his 6 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself. A two-run double off Johnny Guzman in the 2nd inning accounted for his 1st hit. He collected singles in the 2nd inning , in the 3rd inning (one RBI) , in the 4th inning (two RBIs) , in the 6th inning and in the 7th . Garret scored 5 runs, and he collected 5 RBI as well! This season has been a good one for him so far, as he has 192 hits in 554 at bats, resulting in a .347 batting average. The final score of the game was 37-2.

LOS ANGELES (N) - San Francisco's first baseman Will Clark once again displayed his tremendous ability to make contact with that little white ball. He tore up Los Angeles (N)'s pitching staff with a 5 hit performance on Monday. Number 3 in the 7th inning accounted for a double. His 4th hit, a two-run homerun off Stan Belinda in the 8th inning, landed an estimated 439 feet from home plate. His 5th hit was a two-run double off Jessie Hollins in the 9th inning. He had singles in the 1st and in the 5th inning . Will did drive in 4 while scoring 3 runs on his own. His 5 hit performance increases his batting average to .312. The final score of the game was 14-2.
Monday 9/26/1997: Colorado's Boone wins Player of the Week award
Sammy Sosa from Milwaukee wins his 2nd Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the American League. Sosa helped his team with an average of .423 and 14 RBI in 26 at bats. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 7 games. His season numbers are: .313 AVG, 183 hits, 33 doubles, 3 triples and 38 taters, along with 126 RBI and 115 runs scored. He's 2nd in the American League in RBIs and 7th in homeruns! Bret Boone wins his 2nd Player of the Week award. National League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Sunday 9/25/1997: Gregg Zaun (OAK) will miss 7-8 weeks
OAKLAND - Oakland's catcher Gregg Zaun will miss at least 7-8 weeks after he got hurt seriously in a collision at home plate. He laid on the ground without movement for several minutes and had to be carried off the field. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Fractured Wrist which will require surgery. This year Zaun drove in 65 and scored 52 runs while batting .264 with 9 longballs.
Saturday 9/24/1997: Sammy Sosa homers three times against Cleveland
CLEVELAND - Milwaukee beat Cleveland 17-2, but that was not the real story of the game. Sammy Sosa was, as he went deep three times. His 1st shot, off Kyle Farnsworth in the 4th inning, was a two-run homerun and cleared the fence in left field. His 2nd blast, a two-run homerun off Julio Mateo in the 6th inning, landed an estimated 398 feet from home plate. A pitch from Shingo Takatsu in the 9th inning left his bat for a two-run homerun, landing 412 feet from home plate in center field. Overall he finished with 4 hits in 6 AB, scoring FOUR runs and driving in 7 runs. His homerun total this year is 38, along with 124 RBI.
Friday 9/23/1997: San Francisco's Joyner severely injured
SAN FRANCISCO - San Francisco's second baseman Wally Joyner will miss the rest of the season. He injured himself running the bases in the game between San Francisco and Chicago (N). The injury didn't seem to be serious the moment it happened. But suddenly Joyner collapsed in pain and had to be carried off the field. After x-rays were taken the diagnosis did not surprise many: Ruptured Achilles Tendon. Surgery will be performed next week. His season features a batting average of .330 (174 hits in 527 AB), 36 doubles, 3 triples and 14 longballs. Joyner collected 89 RBI and 83 runs as well. He's 6th in the National League in batting!
Friday 9/23/1997: Kevin Brown dominates Seattle, throws NO-HITTER
TORONTO - Toronto's right-hander Kevin Brown is a really great pitcher. And he once again showed his stuff while making history, blanking Seattle on no hits. 'They took some ugly cuts at my breaking stuff, so I kept throwing it. Fortunately they were not able to adjust in time.' Brown (17-7) struck out 5 and walked 1, throwing 63 of 103 pitches for strikes. Toronto's second baseman Bret Barberie finished 3 for 5, hitting 2 doubles, scoring two runs. That was enough to support the brilliant performance of Brown. The final score of the game was 9-0.
