It's the 8th time that the American League Pitcher of the Month award goes to Toronto's pitcher Kevin Brown. He had an ERA of just 0.79 in 34 innings of work in which he struck out 20 hitters. His record in August is 5-0. His ERA of 1.79 helped him to a 23-2 record this year. He struck out 124 and walked 43 in 201 innings. He has 5 complete games and one shutout. He's 1st in the American League in ERA and 1st in wins! Pittsburgh's pitcher Dwight Gooden is the National League winner of the Pitcher of the Month award in August. He's 1st in the American League in batting, 5th in homeruns and 10th in RBI! The Batter of the Month award in the National League goes to Colorado's Jose Vidro this time, as the second baseman displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Wednesday 8/31/1999: New York (A)'s Melvin Nieves ropes five hits
BOSTON - 'Wow, five hits in one game is something special, isn't it?' said New York (A)'s designated hitter Melvin Nieves after the 13-4 win over Boston. A 387 foot drive to left-center marked his 1st hit, a three-run homerun off Jason Beverlin in the 1st inning. Number 3 in the 3rd inning, a shot estimated at 426 feet, cleared the wall in right field. In the 9th inning he belted a double off Pep Harris. He had singles in the 2nd inning and in the 5th . Melvin did drive in 5 while scoring 2 runs on his own. He now has a total of 127 hits this season, accounting for a .269 batting average.
Tuesday 8/30/1999: Carlos Beltran homers three times against San Diego
CINCINNATI - Carlos Beltran was in a groove, and the results spoke for themselves. He powered Cincinnati to a 8-3 win over San Diego by homering three times. In the 2nd inning he unloaded a two-run homerun off James Baldwin. His 2nd shot, off James Baldwin in the 4th inning, was a three-run homerun and cleared the fence in center field. A 461 foot drive to left-center marked his 3rd bomb, a solo homerun off Cris Carpenter in the 6th inning. Carlos went 3 for 4, scoring three runs and driving in 6 runs.
Monday 8/29/1999: California's Griffey Jr. wins Player of the Week award
California's leftfielder Ken Griffey Jr. had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. Ken went 12 for 24 (.500), while hitting 4 HR and collecting 6 RBI. Ken has gone 131 for 441 (.297) this season, hitting 35 taters and driving in 96 runs. He has scored 102 runs on his own. Chicago (N)'s catcher B.J. Surhoff had some reason to celebrate as well, as the league named him the National League Player of the Week. TORONTO - Toronto's leftfielder Reggie L. Sanders will miss about 6 weeks after he hurt himself badly in the 5th inning of the game between Toronto and Chicago (A).
