Adam Hyzdu from Toronto wins his 2nd Player of the Week award for putting up the best numbers this week in the American League. Hyzdu helped his team with an average of .438 and 9 RBI in 16 at bats. The Player of the Week award in the National League goes to Los Angeles (N)'s Jim Thome this time, as the second baseman displayed the best offensive perfomance in his league. Thome helped his team with an average of .429 and 8 RBI in 21 at bats. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 7 games. His season features a batting average of .320 (16 hits in 50 AB), 5 doubles, one triple and 6 taters. Thome collected 20 RBI and 12 runs as well. He's 1st in the National League in RBIs and 2nd in homeruns!
Friday 4/15/2000: Tony Fernandez (SFG) will miss 4-5 weeks
SAN FRANCISCO - San Francisco's second baseman Tony Fernandez suffered a serious injury when he was struck by a pitch from Colorado's Scott Karl. He collapsed in pain and was helped off the field. Fernandez will probaby miss 4-5 weeks. After being taken to a local hospital, Fernandez was examined by specialists. The diagnosis revealed the sad truth, a Fractured Jaw. Fernandez has hit for a .143 average this season. He has 1 extra base hits along with 8 total bases, resulting in a .229 slugging percentage.
Wednesday 4/13/2000: Edgar Martinez stars with cycle against Florida
CINCINNATI - Edgar Martinez is a pretty good hitter, but his 4 hit performance seemed to surprise even himself considering that the hits added up to the cycle, one of the most difficult things to accomplish in baseball. A two-run triple off Scott Garrelts in the 1st inning, accounted for his 1st hit. A single in the 3rd off Scott Garrelts accounted for his 2nd hit. His 3rd hit, a solo homerun off Scott Garrelts in the 5th inning, cleared the fence in left field. A pitch from J.J. Putz in the 6th inning left his bat for a two-run double. That drive completed the cycle, causing a smile on his face! Edgar did drive in 5 while scoring 3 runs on his own. His 4 hit performance increases his batting average to .311. He becomes the 103rd player in league history collect at least a single, double, triple and a homerun in a single game. Garey Ingram was the last player to hit for the cycle, doing it 9/8/1999.
Monday 4/11/2000: Morris (CAL) and Dunn (ARZ) win P.O.W. award
Hal Morris wins his 3rd Player of the Week award. American League pitchers couldn't figure out how to retire this guy all week long. Morris helped his team with an average of .481 and 10 RBI in 27 at bats. The National League Player of the Week award goes to Steve R. Dunn, Arizona's starting centerfielder. He hit .600 with 11 RBI and slugged 1.000 in 30 at bats. He hit in every game this week and extended his hitting streak to 17 games. Dunn has hit for a .588 average this season. A double off Anthony Chavez in the 4th inning accounted for his 3rd hit. His 4th hit was a RBI double off Shawn Estes in the 5th inning. The injury didn't seem to be serious the moment it happened. But suddenly Guerrero collapsed in pain and had to be carried off the field. Thursday 4/7/2000: Huge blow for Cincinnati's Bottenfield, career over
CINCINNATI - It was one of baseball saddest days. Cincinnati's right-hander Kent Bottenfield fell victim to a career ending injury in a game against Montreal on Thursday. He complained about pain after throwing a pitch to Vladimir Guerrero, then suddenly collapsed. Doctors examined him after the game and diagnosed a Bone Chips Shoulder which will require surgery. His career featured a record of 47-64 with an ERA of 5.82. Baseball will certainly miss this great player.
