Detroit's second baseman Mark Loretta had some reason to celebrate, as the league named him the American League Player of the Week. He hit .571 with 12 RBI and slugged 1.095 in 21 at bats. Mark managed to drive in at least one run in every game he played this week. His season features a batting average of .301 (116 hits in 385 AB), 20 doubles, 2 triples and 24 longballs. Loretta collected 92 RBI and 70 runs as well. The National League's best player of the week was Pittsburgh's John Valentin, who wins the award for the 2nd time in his career. John went 11 for 18 (.611), while hitting 1 HR and collecting 4 RBI. While compiling an on base percentage of .405, John hit .297 and slugged .502. He has collected 55 runs batted in this year.
Friday 8/5/2000: Detroit's Lima out for 6 weeks
DETROIT - When it rains, it pours. Detroit's right-hander Jose Lima will not pitch for at least 6 weeks, handing the team a huge setback. He suffered a serious injury in a game against Toronto where he left the field in the 3rd inning. Lima was rushed to an hospital near the ballpark, where doctors took x-rays. Those revealed the serious injury, Inflamed Rotator Cuff Muscle. His ERA of 5.09 helped him to a 6-7 record this year. He struck out 100 and walked 45 in 134.1 innings. Jose has pitched 2 shutouts and 4 complete games.
Thursday 8/4/2000: Rafael Palmeiro has 2000th career hits
MONTREAL - Montreal's Rafael Palmeiro showed a smile on his face after he got his 2000th career hit against Atlanta on Thursday. Along with his 2000 hits, Rafael collected 377 homeruns and 1383 RBI in 13 seasons. 'I guess I'll celebrate a bit today. But the most important thing is winning, and my whole career I gave everything I could to help my team.' He hit a three run homerun in the 3rd off Kevin Tapani for number 2000.
Monday 8/1/2000: Player of the Week honors go to Morandini and Ortiz
The American League Player of the Week award goes to Mickey Morandini, Tampa Bay's starting second baseman. Mickey pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .429 with 3 HR and 7 RBI while slugging 1.095. His season features a batting average of .276 (55 hits in 199 AB), 12 doubles, 2 triples and 4 taters. Morandini collected 24 RBI and 46 runs as well. It's the 1st time that the National League Player of the Week award goes to Los Angeles (N)'s first baseman David Ortiz. David was on fire, hitting .529 with 5 HR and 10 RBI. Cincinnati's Ryan Rupe had a terrific July, and it earned him the National League Pitcher of the month award.
