Just kidding. Admit it, you thought this article was going to be announcing that Koufax was getting called up, didn't you?
While Koufax is probably now ready for a taste of the Majors, it is believed the Dodgers are going to leave him in AAA to finish out the season, and he will almost certainly start next season with the big league team. The Dodgers have historically avoided calling up talented prospects mid-season, as they love giving young prospects a shot at winning the coveted Rookie of the Year Award.
That said the Dodgers are calling up talented prospect Jim Gentile. Diamond Jim is currently the Dodgers' second best prospect, the 8th best hitting prospect, and the the 14th best prospect overall in the league.
It is rumored the Dodgers were after a different bat, via trade, to help fill their hole in LF this season. This bat was believed to be a second baseman, but those talks fell through, and coupled with some steady improvement in AAA from Gentile, the Dodgers have decided to give his power bat a spot in the lineup to finish out the season. Per Owner, GM, Manager, and overall nice guy Jeremy Hill, Gentile will most likely be in the everyday lineup against righties, and will get plenty of starts vs lefties as well. The Dodgers believe he will be an everyday player as early as next season.
Gentile is currently hitting .299 with 20 HR's in AAA. He also has an OBP of .411, which shows he is capable of drawing walks from the opposition as well. He will strike out a bit, but the Dodgers are hoping his bat will play well in the lefty hitting friendly LA Memorial Coliseum.
The move will most likely take at-bats away from recently called up Norm Larker, a first baseman, and outfielder Walt Moryn, both of which have played well this season, but lack the upside, and overall power, that Gentile can bring. Though the Dodgers rank 1st in the Majors in runs scored, and 8th in HR's, they have been looking to replace the power that has been dealt away in recent years with guys like Robinson, Campanella, and Furillo.
And here is a picture of Mr. Gentile, in hopes that this average article can earn me that extra fourth point:
