It's definitely a blockbuster, but how do the HOFFBL experts break it down? Not sure if I get rewards points yet, but maybe this is a chance for some of you to earn then...

I wonder if the gms are friends....I hear that often is why lopsided trades happen.

Meh doesn't make sense to get Russell with all the SS's the Cubs have in their system, but if they can play other positions, then the Cubs' offense will be sick. The A's get a couple pitchers for right now, and usually they're on the rebuilding side of trades getting the spects. So we'll see how this works out for everyone.

Yea, I did not understand stockpiling SS's.

Yea, I did not understand stockpiling SS's. Eh. Get talent. Some might flame out. Some you might can move to another position. Or worst case, you can trade a guy.

I think it's a GREAT deal for both teams. The Cubs get Russell, who is probably one, of only two real SURE thing prospects I think they have, along with Bryant. I think Baez has a HUGE ceiling, but also has a chance of never getting the K's under control and never being much of a contributor. If they ALL pan out and you have a lineup of 1B Rizzo, 2B Castro SS Russell 3B Baez LF Soler or Alcantara CF Almora RF Bryant, I think we're all fine with that. If they move Castro or Baez or Russell for some top flight young arms like Wheeler or Harvey from the Mets, I think we're fine with that too. They weren't going to pay Shark Homer Bailey money, so you either let him walk for nothing or take what you can get. It's certainly not out of the question that the Cubs throw shit tons of money at him after 15 if he shows that he deserves it. He doesn't have a lot of miles on his arm for a 29 year old and he fits the profile. I don't think he'd be averse to coming back if he felt the Cubs were ready to win. I love Hammels. I think he's a PERFECT 4/5 starter for this team and I know he loves playing at Wrigley and I really hope the Cubs sign him to a 2-3 year deal in the off season. But you just turned a sign and trade guy and a guy who was going to walk in to a top 10 prospect, another prospect who is probably a top 125 guy for now, but is very young, just out of high school, with a high ceiling AND Dan Strailey, who may be a AAAA pitcher, or may be a 4/5 guy. He's always had the command under control, it's just whether or not he has the stuff to keep from getting hit hard. He had a nice season in Oakland last year, I think most scouts think he can certainly be a bottom of rotation guy. I'll take it. The A's needed arms if they were going to do more than just make the playoffs. They got 2 of the best currently available. Win/Win.

I was thinking Baez could and should probably move to 3B. Castro or Russell at 2B works. I like how the Cubs have re-built their team.

As a Cardinals fan I'll admit I started worrying about the Cubs once the current regime took over. It's obvious they know what they're doing, now it's just a matter of all the young guns panning out.
